International TV news reporters targeted in Egypt; BBC reporter shot, CNN camera confiscated, Al Jazeera personnel detained.


International TV news reporters in Egypt covering the renewed tumultuous social protest action and sweeping political change in that North African country have been targeted as they covered the news.

Jeremy Bowen, the BBC's Middle East editor was shot in the head and leg during a demonstration Cairo on Friday but said the injuries were superficial. Jeremy Bowen was shot by Egyptian troops who started firing pellet guns on protesters at a "pro-Morsi" demonstration for the deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.

The BBC showed dramatic footage of Jeremy Bowen wearing a gas mask with blood running down his face.

Ben Wedeman was busy with a live report on CNN International (DStv 401) when an Egyptian soldier confiscated CNN's camera abruptly bringing the live shot to an end on Friday. In the last few seconds as the camera was turned to the ground, viewers heard the senior international correspondent say "they're trying to take away our camera".

The CNN crew was not detained and the camera was later returned.

Al Jazeera (DStv 406 / TopTV 401) has also been targeted with personnel detained and the Middle Eastern based 24-hour TV news operation demanding the release of its journalists.
