The SABC will be charging the local broadcaster Nyota TV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for the feed of the CAF Champions League soccer match which the SABC beamed to the DRC on 18 April after the SABC received no similar feed-share from the DRC this past weekend from Lubumbashi.
The SABC had a feed-share agreement and contract with Nyota TV which was brokered three weeks ago. Then SABC producers and journalists - a 4 person team - were detained and rough-handled this past weekend before the Orlando Pirates and TP Mazembe soccer match in the DRC.
Since the SABC kept their end of the bargain, and the unprofessional Nyota TV did not, the South African public broadcaster now - rightly - wants to be paid for their supplied feed.
"As the SABC had provided this broadcaster with a feed, the agreement was that they would reciprocate and provide the SABC with a feed for the match that took place in Lubumbashi. As Nyota TV did not heed this agreement, the SABC feels that it is a matter of principle and they should be held accountable for the costs," says Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the SABC's acting chief operating officer (COO).
"The fact that they did not provide us the feed as agreed had a negative impact as the South African public was robbed seeing one of our premier soccer clubs representing the country, in one of the most prestigious soccer tournaments on the continent," says Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
