I can break the news and exclusively reveal that M-Net has bagged the exclusive broadcasting rights to ... ta-da ... Defiance - the hotter-than-hot brand new science fiction drama series which will be rolling out from April around the world with viewers who will be able to shape some of the story through playing the simultaneously-released global video game.
According to sources M-Net has definitely secured the broadcasting rights to this amazing-looking new drama which will be starting in America on 15 April. M-Net confirms to me that Defiance "is indeed licensed to M-Net".
What is not known yet regarding Defiance is what channel M-Net will be placing it on - for instance M-Net (DStv 101) so that it can be seen in high-definition (HD) or M-Net Series (DStv 114). Also not known is the exact starting date of Defiance in South Africa and the broadcasting dates.
The great, big and good news however is that M-Net has Defiance, and that South African pay-TV viewers will get to see this breath-taking new drama which is a mix of Bravestarr, Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, Falling Skies, Stargate Atlantis and Star Wars' Mos Eisley all mixed together.
The show's name comes from the "town" of Defiance - what is, in the future, left of St Louis. First mankind was attacked by aliens. In an even battle, basically both sides are almost wiped out. Then the war ends, but the aliens (actually 7 different types of alien species) stay. Mankind and aliens integrate. But then a brand-new alien threat looms on the horizon...
In another brand-new concept, Defiance the TV show will be coming out at the same time as Defiance the video game which people would be able to play globally. The fun thing is that the producers will incorporate into the storylines, some of the gameplaying outcomes gathered from how the millions of video game players interact with the world of Defiance, the characters and each other.
Cool facts: Just like Klingon, Defiance has a show linguist. Two of the alien races already have fully developed languages which had been developed for them. Defiance is show in Toronto, Canada.
There's secretly an eight Votan alien race (but all we will now when Defiance starts is that they have died out. Maybe the other seven alien races know more than what they're telling.
A bit like Bravestarr and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, Defiance is strong on real dramatic stories, but it's set in a futuristic Western backdrop. Main characters include the mayor, the sheriff (or "Chief Lawkeeper"), the mine-owner, brothel owner, and of course the alien representatives.
