BREAKING. SABC bigwigs keep coining it; annual report reveals big pay for the biggest executives at the troubled public broadcaster.
The South African public broadcaster still lurches from crisis to crisis, deals with ongoing top management upheaval, and once again received a qualified audit (note: that's a bad thing). The SABC faced new public marches and demonstration and has had a head of news still on "special leave" for months now.
Keeping in mind the overall state of the SABC, here is the total remuneration for the financial year which the SABC's biggest earners - members of the SABC board and senior management at the broadcaster - received as listed in the SABC's latest and public annual report for 2011/2012, the information of which was approved by the SABC board:
Dr Ben Ngubane, the chairperson of the SABC board, who has been widely criticised for his lack of leadership and who told parliament in September that the SABC board has "degenerated into serious dysfunctionality":
R639 000
Lulama Mokhobo, the CEO of the SABC
R774 000
Cawekazi Mahlati, the SABC board member who got a unanimous vote of no confidence from all of the other SABC board members this year who all want her gone. She co-incidentally is also the SABC board member, looking at the figures in the SABC annual financial report, getting the biggest overall remuneration from the SABC besides Dr Ben Ngubane.
R473 000
Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the SABC's acting chief operating officer. He famously doesn't have matric and is now also in charge of overseeing the SABC's news operations.
R1,61 million
Phil Molefe, the SABC's head of news and current affairs who also acted as acting CEO for a period. He was placed on "special leave" earlier this year, and is still awaiting some kind of disciplinary hearing for reasons the SABC has not yet publicly disclosed but which has caused a lot of controversy and speculation.
(Meanwhile the SABC is trying to set up a 24 hour news channel on DStv with substantial investment from MultiChoice but without the "real" head of news.)
R2,22 million
Anton Heunis, the SABC's group executive of sales of the SABC's commercial division.
R3,46 million
Bessie Tugwana, head of television
R1,52 million
Charlotte Mampane, head of editorial policy and regulatory governance
R2,36 million
Yvonne Johnston, head of marketing
R2,06 million
Richard Waghorn (R2,56 million) the SABC chief technology officer, Thelma Melk (R4,38 million), Robin Nicholson (R1,04 million) (acting CEO), Lerato Nage (R1,52 million) as the acting chief financial officer are all now gone from the SABC but still received these total remuneration from the SABC in the financial year just reported on (2011/2012) as part of earnings.
