OPINION. Why is the struggling SABC sending out a press release containing the word champagne and fine cuisine ...

The SABC which is still struggling as a public broadcaster and which has still not paid back R1 billion out of R1,47 billion to the South African government, probably should know a little bit better than invoking frivolous spending and being seen to be associated with conspicuous consumption.

Yet in a statement today, the South African public broadcaster says being at and a part of the upcoming Durban July horseracing event where sparking wine will flow as high society munch on fine cuisine, is what the SABC does to help inspire South Africa.

"As the biggest and leading broadcaster in South Africa in South Africa, the SABC has to look for opportunities that will affirm its leadership role in media and society," says Kaizer Kganyago, SABC spokesperson in a statement. In it the SABC officially announced it will be giving coverage on television and radio to the Durban July event.

"The majority of South Africans aspire to attend events such as these and in most cases do not have the opportunity to do so. The SABC's comprehensive 'on the ground' coverage will ensure that there is sufficient reach and leverage of the event."
