The SABC plans to start test runs for its new 24 hour news channel by the end of the year.

The SABC plans to start test runs for the public broadcaster's 24 hour news channel by the end of 2012.

The SABC's new CEO Lulama Makhobo told parliament when she presented the SABC's new 3 year Corporate Plan 2012 - 2015 that the SABC's first goal with the 24 hour news channel is to start test runs by the end of the year.

The new 24 hour news channel will replace the SABC's former costly 24 hour news channel, SABC News International which failed and was shut down.

The SABC plans to increase its 3 existing TV channels to 18 with the switch-over to digital terrestrial television (DTT) in South Africa, a process known as digital migration. The SABC plans to launch 6 of these new digital television channels by the end of the current financial year - which will include the new news channel, as well as SABC Sport, a dedicated sport channel.
