BREAKING. Dearly (and clearly) beloved: Downton Abbey on BBC Entertainment immediately embraced by South African viewers.

It's didn't take long. One episode in fact. South African viewers have immediately embraced the delectable Downton Abbey as the biggest and best new drama on television with the first episode of the totally terrific drama which started on Sunday at 20:30 on BBC Entertainment (DStv 120) pulling in 144 000 viewers.

Downton Abbey, a period drama set in 1912 which is not hard to follow (actually awesome in fact), pulled a massive viewership this past Sunday night in South Africa, with the 144 000 audience making BBC Entertainment the number one international TV channel on DStv in its 20:30 timeslot.

Downton Abbey's first of 7 episodes also achieved the second highest viewership figure on BBC Entertainment so far this year. Jon Farrar, the vice president for programming for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region for BBC Worldwide Channels, calls the hotly-anticipated TV drama performance in South Africa - and which has been making waves in both Britain and America - a ''successful debut''.
