The SABC's top executives and SABC board are still flying business class despite financial problems that beset South Africa's public broadcaster - but they told South Africa's parliament why they're still flying high.
Despite austerity measures and a turn-around strategy thats been implemented to curb runaway spending and clamp down on excessive at the SABC, the SABC board and top executives was still spotted in business class seats on their latest flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town to tell parliament about the broadcaster's turn-around strategy.
A member of the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications happened to be on the exact same flight as the SABC, and while she had an economy seat, she noted that the SABC bigwigs made themselves all comfy in business class seats. In the latest SABC appearance before the portfolio committee, she asked why the delegation from the SABC had flown to Cape Town in business class while she occupied an economy class seat on the same flight.
Phil Molefe, the SABC's acting group CEO, told parliament - and it's noted as such in the latest parliamentary minutes - that ''the SABC delegation was able to travel in business class to Cape Town because they had frequent flyer status and were upgraded by the airline.''
