BREAKING. SABC pushing on for new 24 hour news TV channel as new minister of communications, Dina Pule, meets the SABC board.
The new minister of communications Dina Pule met the SABC board in Pretoria earlier today, saying that the appointment of a permament new group CEO, a permanent new COO and a permanent new chief financial officer for the SABC are her priority.
''Both the SABC board and the SABC executive has undertaken to make sure that they are going to continue to improve the financial situation of the SABC,'' Dina Pule said.
Dr Ben Ngubane, the chairperson of the SABC board, said that ''she is in agreement that the SABC needs a 24 hour news service because that is a better way to service the peoples of South Africa,'' referring to the 24 hour TV news channel the SABC wants to start.
Dina Pule said ''the SABC is making progress towards its recovery, although it still faces many challenges.'' She said the SABC is still losing money and that ''operational inefficiencies resulting in the loss of funds'' needs ''to be addressed urgently''.
''The SABC board and executive management of the corporation must take their management and fiduciary responsibilities seriously. In particular, both parties must work on building a strong relationship based on mutual professional respect and trust.''
''It is vital that the positions of group CEO, COO and CFO are filled quickly to stabilise the SABC, and this matter has been placed high on the agenda,'' Dina Pule said. ''The SABC will focus on commissioning local content in order to grow the South African industry further and help meet the future content requirements for digital terrestrial television.''
