Some of the SABC's new digital TV channels for digital terrestrial television (DTT) could be +1 hour time-shifted channels.
While TV with Thinus broke the news first RIGHT HERE in September that the SABC has specifically-planned DTT channels for its 18 channel DTT line-up that will include a sports channel by means of SABC Sport; a 24 hour news channel, a kids channel, a health channel, an education and SMME channel, a regional north channel and a regional south channel, the rest of the SABC's DTT channels are not yet publicly known.
Gelfand Kausiyo, the SABC's general manager for broadcast fascilities, revealed in his presentation at the AfricaCast 2011 TV summit that ''+1 hour versions of the SABC's current TV channels will now be possible with DTT''.
Gelfand Kausiyo spoke about the SABC's DTT plans and said it's exciting that the SABC will now be in a position to deliver "+1 channels'' to viewers who miss certain TV shows because they get home too late.
The South African pay TV operator On Digital Media (ODM) employs the same time-shifted mechanism for its TopTV service. Included on the TopTV bouquet is the Top Movies +2 (TopTV 101) and Top Movies +24 (TopTV 102) channels on which the same broadcast line-up is respectively shifted 2 hours and 24 hours later than on the original Top Movies channel.
