Hello, pop culture creatures. Idols announced that the remaining Top 6 contestants of the 7th season of the popular reality show on M-Net will be doing another group song together for Sunday evening's episode at 17:30 on M-Net (DStv 101) and Mzansi Magic (DStv 107). Sunday's show is recorded on Friday evening.
The song they're singing together? A version of Taoi Cruz's ''Dynamite''. Mmm. No word from M-Net, Idols or my sources yet, but it immediately made me wonder: Is Idols and the remaining contestants working on another little surprise that it hopes to become an insta-viral hit?
If you don't know who Mike Thompkins is, you have to take a look at the brilliant YouTube video below. He did an a cappella version of Taoi Cruz' club hit exactly a year ago which sounded even better than the original. Mike Thompkins sing the song that viewers will see and hear Sunday evening - and he does all the sound instruments himself. That video became an instant viral hit. Then America's Today show copied him and he taught them to sing it and helped them to do a ''Dynamite'' a cappella video version which then went viral too.
Of course when Idols announced on Thursday the Top 6 will be singing ''Dynamite'' together, I instantly thought I hope they're doing something like what Today did - and even with a bit of Autotune thrown in on purpose in a sing in which Autotune actually serves a wonderful and appropriate purpose!
