M-Net channel head, Pierre Cloete, on why the M-Net channel marker moved from the top right to the top left corner of your TV screen since April.

I broke the news at the end of last year that M-Net was planning to make all the channel logos of the M-Net channels more uniform and to move the channel markers from the top right to the top left corner of the TV screen. Both these things happened from April exactly as I've reported. I asked Pierre Cloete, M-Net channel head why M-Net decided to move the M-Net channel marker from the top right to the top left corner.

''Your channel logo has to go somewhere on the screen but you can't just put it anywhere,'' Pierre Cloete told me when I asked him recently. ''We do a lot of research about this and we constantly get feedback. According to the latest research available the top right hand corner – and to put your logo there, is a bit more intrusive that the top left corner.''

''So we took the decision to move the ident on all the M-Net channels to the left hand side at the top so that it's less intrusive for the viewer. The other thing is that because of how television is filmed, there's somewhat less action happening in the left top corner. There's less faces. Putting the logo there means it won't be displayed over information and people. So the impact of the logo on the screen is eventually less.''
