SABC switching to a completely digital production and newsgathering process with 1 200 staff and a HD broadcast hub for upcoming election.

The upcoming local government election in South Africa will be the first one that the SABC in terms of its production process will be covering completely digitally (except for still the analogue broadcast signal part).

The SABC is employing 1 200 staff members (500 of which is for SABC Radio) to cover the upcoming local government election in South Africa with 100 TV cameras that will be used across the country covering election news.

The SABC will be making use of, and crossing over to, at least 26 outside broadcast points throughout South Africa. The TV production of the public broadcaster's election coverage will be end to end digital, with conversion back to an analogue signal only at the point of transmission to air.

The SABC will have 9 outside broadcasting units (OB's) (one in each of the 9 provinces across South Africa) and will also be utilizing a brand-new high-definition (HD) outside broadcasting unit in Pretoria that will be known as the central Pretoria Broadcast Hub, coordinating the SABC's nationwide election coverage.
There will also be 17 remote mobile units of the SABC to feed news footage from all 12 of the SABC's regional offices to the SABC's main studio at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Centre. The SABC will start to broadcast from a studio at the IEC from tomorrow (Monday 16 May), starting with the SABC2 breakfast show Morning Live.
