The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) told parliament today that e.tv as a free to-air broadcaster is not willing to help and assist with election coverage for the upcoming election..

Icasa told parliament's portfolio committee on communications this afternoon that e.tv as a free-to-air broadcaster hasn't responded to Icasa regarding the regulatory authority's plan to give all 121 registered political parties in South Africa at least 2 minutes of airtime in the upcoming month.

''The law does non empose on the non public broadcasters like e.tv to help with election coverage, they do it voluntarily,'' said Icasa. ''We have not seen e.tv coming forward. They have not responded to our regulations.''

''Instead we've had commercial radio stations and community radio stations coming forward to help with election coverage. And were very excited that such a large portion of them are excited and willing to participate in the election process,'' Icasa said.
