BBC appoints Jana Bennett to run BBC Worldwide's TV channels from February; launch its global iPlayer early next year.

Jana Bennett has been appointed president of the BBC's Worldwide Networks and Global iPlayer and will effectively take over control of running BBC Worldwide from February 2011.

Jana Bennett will control all of the BBC Worldwide TV channels such as BBC Entertainment (DStv 120), BBC Lifestyle (DStv 180), BBC Knowledge (DStv 251) and CBeebies (DStv 306) seen in South Africa.

In a press release just issued by BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, the British broadcaster says Jana Bennett, currently the TV chief of the BBC, will become responsible for the wholly-owned, BBC-branded channels as well as BBC Worldwide's ''multi-platform distribution strategy'', the broadcaster's plan to roll out its successful iPlayer worldwide in the first half of next year. ''I always said it would take something pretty special to get me to consider another job in broadcasting. Well, the chance to manage and grow BBC Worldwide's portfolio of channels was just that challenge,'' says Jana Bennett in the press release.

''She is just the person to take our international channels to the next level and oversee the creation of a successful Golbal iPlayer,'' says Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC in the press release.
