You've GOTTA be kidding. The SABC - yes the SABC - wins an award for . . . ''excellence''.

Sadly, it's not an April fools' joke.

After dumping a loyal employee who reached retirement age out on the street without telling her, sitting with a suspended group CEO (the second one in a row who'll also probably get a payout of millions just to go away), beset by internal top management strife and infighting, sinking under a mountain of debt and plagued by financial mismanagement and massive corruption the South African public broadcaster has won an award for . . . excellence. Wonders never cease.

The sad and sorry mess that is the SABC has won in the Public Sector Excellence survey carried out by TNS Research Surveys and the Brand Leadership Academy that purportedly heralds the broadcaster as the public sector institution with (don't laugh too hard!) ''the best overall reputation'' under ordinary South Africans. The SABC also won awards for (don't laugh too hard!) among other things ''internal effectiveness'' and ''service orientation''.
