globalCom Satellite awarded the first Iridium satellite phone license in South Africa.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has awarded globalCom Satellite the first license in South Africa to sell Iridium satellite phone systems in the country.

TV journalists often use satellite phones for fascilitate live news broadcasts with video streamed TV reporters on location back to TV news studios around the globe. Communication services on the Iridium satellite network has been available in South Africa before (through the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) roaming GMPCS memorandum of understanding) but there was no official satellite phone license holder. Now outside broadcast units (OB's) of TV stations can be constantly connected irrespective of their physical location.
