BREAKING. MultiChoice will apply for a digital mobile TV licence in South Africa.

You're reading it here first.

I can confirm that MultiChoice will definitely be applying for a digital mobile television licence within the next three weeks from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

Icasa has just opened the long-delayed process of creating and allowing digital mobile TV in South Africa and just opened the application process for a three week period. It means that TV broadcasts over cellphones could finally become a reality in South Africa that's lagging far behind the rest of the world with this technology. The regulator has been dragging it's heels for years regarding the licencing of mobile TV players in South Africa, with companies like MultiChoice that has invested heavily in infrastructure, technology, handsets as well as testing, and have been in quiet roll-out anxiety because of Icasa's regulation limbo.

''MultiChoice welcomes Icasa's decision to implement mobile television,'' says Nico Meyer, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa. ''We continually look for opportunities to enhance our offering to customers. We intend to fully participate in the application process.''
