BREAKING. MultiChoice tracking the development of 3D television very ''closely''.

You're reading it here first.

MultiChoice is very aware of the brand-new 3D television technology, in fact MultiChoice that runs the DStv satellite TV platform in South Africa and the rest of the continent ''is tracking the development of 3D broadcasting closely''.

Tuesday I wrote about the possibility of 3D TV channels for South Africa RIGHT HERE. I asked MultiChoice whether we might see the addition of any 3D TV channels in South Africa on the DStv bouquet, similar to what the American TV industry is working on. I wanted to find out when it might happen - and whether the satellite TV pay operator is looking into this.

''There are no 3D broadcast standards yet,'' MultiChoice tells me, ''despite many broadcasters experimenting with ad hoc systems - but we believe it will follow shortly.

''The Blu-Ray disk standard for 3D has recently been finalised, but no compliant players are available yet,'' says MultiChoice. ''Even the display technology are not settled – 3M is promising a display technology that will not require the 3D glasses (which is probably a prerequisite for 3D to become mainstream). As soon as the elements for mainstream 3D broadcasting have fallen in place (common standards, widely available content, viable displays), MultiChoice will be in a position to formulate its 3D plans.''

Interesting additional reading, are these 2 stories from USA Today HERE about how TV's and all other devices are increasingly being networked with the internet and HERE about how 2010 could very well be the year for 3D television at home (in America)
