You're reading it here first. National Geograhic Channel HD will launch in South Africa soon on DStv.
After I broke the news here first yesterday about SuperSport starting the SuperSport HD channel on DStv , I did some digging. MultiChoice's COO told me a few months ago some more HD channels will be launched imminently, and that time is now here. At the DStv year end party for the press and media last month I asked around again - but everyone was tight-lipped.
With the official announcement of SuperSport HD yesterday I started to ask around, since I've known for a while - and heard idle gossip about some new channels starting soon. A MultiChoice source told me the other new HD channel starting soon will be National Geographic HD.
Also, the announcement yesterday by SuperSport HD was apparently supposed to be for BOTH HD channels launching, but it seems as if National Geographic and MultiChoice - because of some admin and bureaucracy - aint quite there and ready. . . yet.
Word from my sources is that the official announcement of National Geographic HD becoming available on the DStv Premium bouquet will be made between Monday and Wednesday next week.
MultiChoice wants to boost its HD channel offering, which currently consists only of M-Net HD (DStv 170). MultiChoice's COO told me a few months ago that 3 or 4 prospective new HD channels were being looked at (movies, documentary and sport, but for now only 2 will be added (eg. SuperSport HD and National Geographic HD). The movie channel will follow a bit later it seems.
