BREAKING. SABC blasted for 'half-cooked' skills audit and tardiness about implementing auditor-general's recommendations over corruption.

Parliament's portfolio committee for communications yesterday blasted the South African public broadcaster for what it called the SABC's "half-cooked" skills audit and heaped scorn on the SABC's apparent tardiness to implement the multiple findings of the auditor-general's recommendations which found widespread corruption at the beleaguered corporation in 2009.

Thabiso Lesala, the group executive of human capital services at the SABC, gave parliament's portfolio committee for communications an update yesterday on the broadcaster's audit and said that its purpose was to assess the available skills within the SABC and to measure it against what the SABC current needs to sustain the corporation.

So far only two thirds of SABC employees have completed the skills questionaire. Many SABC workers are suspicious of the skills audit; perceiving it to be a ploy by the SABC to get rid of people. Parliament told the SABC that the skills audit doesn't pay enough attention to technical skills and that the SABC has an oversupply of middle management.

Parliament was also concerned over the integrity and credibility of the skills audit since the SABC is conducting its own internal skills audit. Sikhumbuzo Kholwane, the chairperson of the portfolio committee branded the skills audit as "something half-cooked".
