TopTV has started to refer to its 3 Playboy porn channels the pay TV operator plans to make available to TopTV subscribers as a separate stand-alone package with an additional subscription of R199 as its ''Adult Pack'' and says in a press release it will be ''on a distinct pay TV platform; will require a disticnt subscription and will be encrypted and PIN-code protected''.
In it's second press release, On Digital Media (ODM) which runs TopTV, says ''the Adult Pack that is soon to be introduced on the TopTV plaform comes on the back of research that has found there is a viable market for Adult content in South Africa.''
TV with Thinus asked for the research the claim made on is based and more specifics from it, but TopTV declined and said ''this is confidential and proprietary to TopTV''. Asked for an indication of how many people who partook in the research indicated they want pornographic channels, TopTV declined a specific answer and said in response that ''there was enough of a response from the research''.
TopTV says the pay TV operator conducted a ''quantitative research study commissioned by TopTV and conducted by an independent research company among 500 adults across all population groups''. TopTV isn't willing to share any other information from the research except to say ''71% of respondents agreed that an adult has a right to watch pornography in the privacy of his/her home''.
''The introduction of the Adult Pack of channels meets a market demand,'' says Marius Liebenberg, senior vice president of sales and marketing at TopTV in the release.
''However we have taken every precaution to ensure that the content can only be accessed by people older than 18 who have consciously made a financial decision to acquire the distinct Adult Pack and then only on a distinct encrypted platform through a separate monthly subscription and only after entering a unique, four-digit PIN to unlock the content.''
Subscribers will also have to contact a separate call centre to activate the porno channels since ''the Adult Pack will not be introduced into the TopTV bouquet as simply another channel universally accessible to all subscribers'' says TopTV.
