HILARIOUS. SABC now denies that it asked the government and the National Treasury for almost R6,9 billion over the next 3 years.

Did you hear the one where the National Treasury told parliament on the Tuesday that the struggling South African public broadcaster asked the government for R6,9 billion rand for the next 3 years - only for the SABC to hastily get the unions together for moral and PR support and convene a press conference on a Friday morning to say it didn't really ask for that money?

The SABC seemingly appears to be saying that the National Treasury lied to government. ''These reports are untrue,'' Justice Ndaba, the SABC's head of strategy said at a hastily convene press conference at the SABC this morning.

The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) says it's ''delighted'' that the SABC top executive is rectifying ''the mistake made by the chairperson of the SABC board'' dr Ben Ngubane with his utterances ''such as early retirement, voluntary severance packages and reducing headcount which to us in the trade union movement language simply means retrenchment.''

''As the CWU we will never allow any action by any employer including the SABC which is intended to destroy jobs in an economy that is already experiencing high levels of unemployment and poverty.''
