Fantasy youth drama series, The Shannara Chronicles, on Netflix cancelled by Viacom; producers Sonar Entertainment looking for a new TV channel to take it over.
Sometimes even an elfstone ain't enough to save the world (or your show): The Shannara Chronicles available on Netflix in South Africa and Africa has been cancelled after two seasons, with Viacom opting not to renew the fantasy series.
The Shannara Chronicles that was on MTV and made for MTV in America, is one of the victims in the fallout of the massive restructuring in getting rid of scripted and drama series on all of Viacom's channels besides Viacom's new flagship and premium general entertainment channel, the Paramount Network launching in America tomorrow.
If The Shannara Chronicles did get a third season from Viacom, the show would have had to move to the Paramount Network, exactly as TVwithThinus speculated would likely be the case a year ago, in February 2017 - only the new Paramount Network didn't want the show, feeling that it doesn't fit in with what the new channel wants to be.
No word yet on when South African viewers will will get to see the Paramount Network on possibly MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service, or StarSat or perhaps one of the new streaming services.
The Shannara Chronicles was renewed for a second season in 2016 but then episodes were suddenly burnt off in a roll-out of 2 episodes per week in October and November of 2017 as Viacom raced to get rid of it.
The fantasy drama series produced by Sonar Entertainment and based on the fantasy novels of the famed fantasy author Terry Brooks could still be picked up by another TV channel or streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video for instance, but the chances are slim.
Netflix has been showing The Shannara Chronicles outside of America and starred Austin Butler (Wil), Ivana Baquero (Eretria), Manu Bennett (Allanon), Aaron Jakubenko (Ander) and Marcus Vanco (Bandon).
Sonar Entertainment is now looking for a new TV channel or streaming service to possibly take over the show that filmed in New Zealand.
America's TV Guide was first to report the cancellation of The Shannara Chronicles, quoting Kevin Kay, the new Paramount Network president as saying "We have officially passed on making any more. Maybe Sonar Entertainment is going to take it somewhere else. For us, we passed on the future of that".

Viacom launches dramatic TV channel collection shake-up to 'narrow down' its focus as pay-TV broadcasters start to shrink their bouquets.
Viacom wants its
In a dramatic reorganisation, media conglom Viacom announced that it will "narrow down" its focus from its 25 TV channels to just 6 global TV channels as it's rapidly forced to shrink its efforts and attention amidst falling revenues and viewership, to adapt to pay-TV broadcasters that's shrinking their channel bouquet offerings.
Viacom will rebrand Spike TV - a channel not available in South Africa - to Paramount Network in 2018 in the United States, to be the same as its Paramount Channel operated and distributed by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) in some countries.
Viacom calls Paramount its foremost new broad-based premiere general entertainment channel from now on. It means that VIMN will start to push the Paramount Channel overseas as its new premiere channel in global territories.
Paramount Network, together with BET (DStv 129), Comedy Central (DStv 122), MTV (DStv 130), Nickelodeon (DStv 305) and Nick Jr. (DStv 307) will now be Viacom's flagship channel brands with all of Viacom's effort, focus and content spending going to these channels.
These channels were chosen because their brands are available globally, for instance in South Africa and across Africa and elsewhere in the world, while lower-tiered channels like VH1 will from now on get little investment and serve to pop up these 6 channels and their content.
These channels can also connect closest to Paramount Pictures film studios to unlock more focused synergy projects going forward, and the 6 channels also have strong digital footprints.
Viacom's dramatic reshaping comes as pay-TV broadcasters in the United States, as well as worldwide - including pay-TV operators in South Africa like MultiChoice and China's StarTimes South Africa - are dumping non-performing channels in a fast-changing pay-TV landscape where the trend of so-called "skinny bundling" is accelerating.
"These 6 brands each have compelling, valuable and distinct brand propositions," said Bob Bakish, Viacom CEO, who previously ran Viacom's international networks division.
"They serve diverse, substantial audiences with largely-owned content, have global reach and distribution potential across linear, digital, film, and consumer products, events and experiences. Viacom's other brands – some of which hold strong positions in their categories and maintain diverse and loyal followings – will be realigned to reinforce the six flagship brands".
The plan is to focus on funneling stronger content to these channels in predominantly America to lift viewers and restore ratings by focusing content creation on smaller, more aligned areas like black viewers (BET), kids (Nickelodeon, Nick Jr.) and young adults (Comedy Central, MTV).
Bob Bakish said the "strategy will enable Viacom to realise the full potential of its premier global portfolio of entertainment brands".
Viacom is also keeping its latest shows away from streaming services. Viacom says its shows are for pay-TV platforms and their subscription television channels.
Scripted programming focus moving from MTV to Paramount
Viacom is immediately moving its scripted TV programming efforts to Paramount Network. There will no longer be drama shows like Teen Wolf made by and for MTV for instance. MTV will resort back to reality shows and music.
Spike TV will start the TV drama series The Mist later this year. Bob Bakish calls it an example of how Viacom erred and will now change. Viacom commissioned The Mist, but its one show on one channel, instead of focusing channels' efforts on building line-ups with scale.
"You had Spike TV trying to launch The Mist but the problem was they were only launching The Mist.’ They didn't have enough to develop a night. We were spending money but not doing in a place where we'd have a high probability of an attractive return".
Scripted drama for MTV didn't work. It's not clear, but The Shannara Chronicles for its already commissioned second season might be moving from MTV to Paramount Network for instance. MTV will refocus around doing reality shows - the My Super Sweet 16 and Jersey Shore type shows.
The rest of Viacom's also-ran channels like VH1, VH1 Classic and others will now become "reinforcing channels". They won't get as much content investment or marketing.
Impact on Africa
The reshaping of Viacom's channels' collection on the surface seems as if it won't necessitate a large wholesale reorganisation for its operations in Africa under its VIMN Africa divison led by Alex Okosi.
Besides the Paramount Channel, the other 5 channels in the new "flagship group" are available in South Africa and in some countries across Africa.
Investment in local, regionalised content for channels like BET Africa, MTV Base and Comedy Central Africa will very likely continue to grow strongly, and investment in more local programming and live marketing events for Nickelodeon will also continue.
Channels like MTV Europe, VH1 Classic and NickToons are there for watching, but African viewers won't be outraged if they were to quietly disappear over time.
Paramount: Building distinctive programming
In an internal email to staff on Thursday, Kevin Kay, Spike TV president, said that "For more than 100 years, the iconic Paramount name has been closely associated with the biggest stars and most compelling stories in all of entertainment."
"It's a studio known worldwide with unparalleled brand recognition. As one of the biggest media companies in the world, Viacom has an incredibly wide-ranging portfolio of indelible brands that have unique and powerful relationships with broad and diverse audiences across the globe, including the successful Paramount Channel aired internationally, from France to Latin America to Russia."
"The Paramount Network will take Spike's already strong programming mix and amplify it with the Paramount brand."
"Its focus will be on building distinctive, high-quality scripted and non-scripted original programming – with dramas, comedies, documentaries, movies, sports and tentpole events. It will also incorporate third-party programming, as well as films from other studio's libraries".

MTV's successful new fantasy drama series, The Shannara Chronicles, renewed for a second season; no episode order or starting date given.
The fantasy drama series based on the fantasy novels of the famed fantasy author Terry Brooks.started at the beginning of the year and just concluded its 10-episode, first season run as MTV's first drama series.
Interestingly, The Shannara Chronicles ranked as the highest grossing digital download for a single season on MTV in the channel's history in America, accomplishing the goal of attracting more, new and new younger viewers to the brand.
In January Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) told TVwithThinus that "it is very likely that we will be airing The Shannara Chronicles on MTV in Africa" but so far nothing has come of it.
VIMN Africa said "we do endeavour to air American series as close as possible to the United States premieres, so we will be able to update you shortly about the premiere date for the series on DStv".
That didn't happen.
Now the show has been renewed for a second season while South African viewers missed out on following the first season as the rest of the world.
In the drama series Austin Butler as a half-human, half elf, goes on a quest with an elf princess (Poppy Drayton) and the last druid (Manu Bennett) to help save the elf kingdom when their magical tree that keeps the demons at bay, starts dying.
No episode order, nor starting date for the second season of The Shannara Chronicles has been announced - nor what story the second season will tell.
The other books in the novel series deal with completely other characters in other eras, and the first season ended where the book ended.
"This dream team delivered a beautiful, groundbreaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers. I can't wait to see what season 2 brings," says Mina Lefevre, the executive vice president and head of scripted development at MTV in America in a statement.
"We're thrilled to continue the momentum established in season 1," says Jenna Glazier, the executive vice president of television series at Sonar Entertainment.
"Along with the ongoing support of MTV, the entire creative team is poised to raise the bar even higher in season 2".

New youth fantasy drama series, The Shannara Chronicles, 'very likely' to be on MTV in Africa on DStv, premiere date not certain.
A new fantasy drama series, The Shannara Chronicles, has just started on Viacom's MTV in the United States but there's not yet any certainty as to when South African and African viewers are going to see it or if it will be on MTV (DStv 130) - although it's likely.
The Shannara Chronicles, filmed in New Zealand, is a Lord of the Rings type fantasy story with humans, elves and demons set in a post-apocalyptic world thousands of years from now - a TV version of the fantasy novels of the famed fantasy author Terry Brooks.
Now, Teen Wolf is also a fantasy drama series from and on MTV in America, but that series eventually went to M-Net's Vuzu and Vuzu Amp (DStv 114) channels in South Africa and Africa.
I've been trying to puzzle out and find out where The Shannara Chronicles would land and when for South African viewers - MTV, or M-Net for one of its channels.
The Shannara Chronicles is 4 episodes into its first season, I've watched the first 3 already two weeks ago, and if you like the Game of Thrones, Teen Wolf, Legend of the Seeker type drama series, you will like this.
I've heard back from Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) responsible for channels like MTV and MTV Base in Africa who tells me "it is very likely that we will be airing The Shannara Chronicles on MTV in Africa".
VIMN Africa tells me they're unable to pinpoint the date that The Shannara Chronicles will start at this time.
"However we do endeavour to air American series as close as possible to the United States premieres, so we will be able to update you shortly about the premiere date for the series on DStv".
The Shannara Chronicles has Austin Butler as a half-human, half elf, going on a quest with an elf princess (Poppy Drayton) and the last druid (Manu Bennett) to help save the elf kingdom when their magical tree that keeps the demons at bay, starts dying.
John Rhys-Davies who was Gimli in Lord of the Rings and who I've loved ever since he was Professor Maximillian Arturo in Sliders.
Something else of interest is that The Shannara Chronicles is produced by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar whose names you'll be very familiar with if like me you've sat through a decade of Smallville which they started.

Uh-oh. Reviews are bad for MTV's new fantasy drama series, The Shannara Chronicles.
I've asked Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) in 2015 several times whether South African viewers will get to see the drama series but got no response. I asked again yesterday when the show started overseas.
- Meanwhile The Shannara Chronicles reviews are not good. Its "central emptiness" also has bad special effects and bad acting and the cheerfully cheap series is pretty boring.
