Soul City Returns to SABC1 after 12 Years as Soul City: Let's Rise - Where's the Media Effort?

by Thinus Ferreira

The edutainment series Soul City is returning to SABC1 after an absence of 12 years, as Soul City: Let's Rise on Sunday 30 August at 19:30 - something the South African public couldn't bother to properly bring to the attention of the media as the latest new show the SABC failed miserably to actually do any PR work for.

On Thursday this week I opened X, previously Twitter, and was very surprised to see a social media entry from a filmmaker not connected to the show, saying Soul City: Let's Rise will start this Sunday on SABC1.

So the first time I heard about it, as a journalist covering television and the film and TV industry in South Africa, is not from the SABC or its PR or marketing division, but from a random tweet on social media

I emailed SABC publicity specialist Caroline Phalakatshela, who later responded and passed me off to a Bongani Ndlovu at the Soul City Institute to "share a press release and to assist further with regard to the project".

I also went to that place's website and found the email address of an Akona Zibonti, who is listed to be emailed about Soul City: Let's Rise. I sent an email, but he/she never responded.

Then on Facebook after a search, I saw that there was a so-called "media launch event" on Wednesday at The Bioscope in Milpark, Johannesburg.

It's unclear on who was invited or attended - there's not really a lot of actual coverage of it or who was there, or any substantial reporting that I could find of what was actually said there about Soul City: Let's Rise.

It's looks like yet another example of people spending money to do something, and then speaking into the wind. No Transcript, no recording, no nothing afterwards.

Once again, like the abject PR failure before the start of Amalanga Awafani on SABC1 last year, the SABC did absolutely nothing to reach out beforehand with Soul City: Let's Rise to even just say "this show will be starting on this date" so that media can diarise it and be aware.

There were no "do you possibly want to do any interviews?", "What do you need press-wise?" or to say there would be any media launch, or to organise any in-person or virtual roundtable interviews with execs, the production or cast.

Not once did either the SABC or the Soul City Institute, after spending millions of rands making 13 episodes of a TV show, bother to pick up a phone, to send a Whatsapp message or a voicenote, an SMS or, to email journalists to make sure that the return of this show is on their radar and in their news diaries.

On Wednesday I started by asking other journalists who also covering film and TV if they have received or heard anything about Soul City: Let's Rise starting on Sunday on SABC1, or if they have reveived a press release or received any form of communication from anybody.

After hearing back from 5 media, I stopped asking further, with all who said they know nothing, heard nothing, got nothing and aren't aware of anything and therefore won't even cover Soul City: Let's Rise.

Surely, whether the work to liaise with media and to actually talk to media, was passed off by the SABC to the Soul City Institute, the SABC PR and marketing division still has a responsibility to check with media whether they are in the loop!

At the least, even if the actual work responsibility of having to deal with media and PR is given to the actual TV show, the SABC PR and marketing division surely must always double-check and at bare minimum, make the real-world effort to reach out and hear and verify if media got press releases, and long before that, actually communicate with journalists!

What lazy, ineptitude and downright callous attitude is this, where you know something is starting on one of your TV channels as a broadcaster in South Africa, but you can't even bother to check whether the media you're supposedly interacting with, are aware of anything?

What exactly is the coverage that the SABC and the Soul City Institute now want, or think it's going to get in terms of so-called "positive" reporting on Soul City: Let's Rise when the effort that went into actually picking up a phone or doing bare-bones communicating with media covering TV, has been non-existent?

While the first episode of Soul City: Let's Rise was screened in-person to people at the media event for those invited, and who knew that it was happening), absolutely Nothing was done for press who were not invited, who didn't even know there would be an event, or who couldn't attend.

There was no digital screener emailed to interested press (how would the SABC or the institute even know whether media would be interested?) with nobody lifting a finger to reach out and ask "do you want to see the show for coverage and review and interview purposes?".

The absolute zero effort or any trace of knowledge of best practice and how it works when launching a TV show, and what the media need, and how to go about it, is really shocking.

Soul City was on South African television for 21 years. Now it's back and ... where's the buzz or the articles and reporting there should be for Soul City: Let's Rise?

The revived Soul City: Let's Rise apparently follows the lives of five women growing up in the Katlehong township.

The characters apparently dream of "education, successful careers, love, independence and better lives. But along the way, they encounter relationships and systems in which money, status, gender, culture, faith and influence can be used to limit their choices and exercise power over them".

The new Soul City: Let's Rise cast includes Pule Buys portraying Samke, Lufuno Mdau as Rhulani, Bohlokoa Nkalai as Neo, Asibonge Ntuli as Thando, and Neo Malaka as Siza.

In a quote taken from the Soul City Institute website, Phinah Kodisang, Soul City Institute CEO, is quoted after the media launch event as having said "After 12 years, Soul City is returning to television at a time when South Africa urgently needs courageous conversations about the realities facing young people, particularly girls and young women, around violence, grooming, vulnerability".

"This is not simply the return of a television series. It is an invitation to South Africans to become part of a movement that believes change is possible when ordinary people choose to act. We want audiences to watch these young women rise and then ask themselves what it means for all of us to rise together against violence, silence and injustice."

Somebody should really tell Phinah Kodisang that there would have been a bigger chance of creating a so-called "movement" with Soul City: Let's Rise if somebody actually properly communicates with the media ,who would cover this show, and who would do coverage on their platforms in synergy with the new programme.

Also quoted is Jacqui Hlongwane, SABC genre manager for education and children.

Jacqui Hlongwane is quoted as saying, "The return of the Soul City franchise is a particularly significant moment for SABC Education".

Sadly, this also feels disingenuous and fake.

If Soul City: Let's Rise really were "a significant moment", why the lack of effort, the lack of conveying and communicating anything about this show, and the apparent lack of involving the real media in any coverage plans in the weeks beforehand?

Ofentse Thinane, SABC1 channel head, is also quoted, saying, "By bringing these stories to SABC1, we are not only giving audiences compelling entertainment, but creating a platform for dialogue, reflection and awareness. We are especially excited about the opportunity to connect with young audiences and encourage conversations that can extend beyond the television screen and into homes, friendships and communities."

While SABC1 might do lip-service, wanting to try and "connect with young audiences", it definitely didn't "connect" with the media about Soul City: Let's Rise

Soul City: Let's Rise is produced by Mindset Concept, with funding from What Works and UK International Development.

Sadly, I couldn't find anything on the executive producer(s) or directors, or the very basic stuff a show, or the SABC should be sending the media beforehand about the making of it.

Stained Glass TV's Uzalo adds four actors to season 12 on SABC1 for 'more heart, more tension and honest storytelling'

by Thinus Ferreira

The Stained Glass TV weekday primetime soap on SABC1, Uzalo, has added four actors to the cast for its 12th season.

The KwaMashu-set series in KwaZulu-Natal has added Nduduzo Zuma, Phindile Mashabane, Sikhosiphi Ngcobo and Thulani Mtsweni.

Nduduzo Zuma has already appeared since 27 March as Smiso, described as a "bold, magnetic newcomer who arrives in KwaNjomane as part of its revamped, youthful energy".

"Charming, stylish, unpredictable and impossible to miss, Smiso quickly becomes more than just a fresh face, finding himself entangled in emotional dynamics with Babekazi that threaten to spiral beyond his control. His presence introduces a playful yet disruptive force that shifts the balance in unexpected ways."

Phindile Mashabane joined as LaDlamini and first appeared on 8 April. LaDlamini is described as "a sophisticated and self-made businesswoman whose quiet confidence speaks volumes".

"Intelligent, composed, and unwavering in her standards. She enters KwaMashu as a woman who knows her worth, immediately capturing Mbatha’s attention. But LaDlamini is not easily won over, and her presence sets the stage for a compelling pursuit marked by power, pride, and ambition."

Sikhosiphi Ngcobo joined Uzalo as Bab’Sizwe and will first appear on 10 April.

The character is described as "a respected traditional leader whose grief quickly transforms into a quest for justice".

"Following the death of Chief Shepherd, Bab’Sizwe’s pain fuels a growing tension determined to erase Nkunzi’s legacy e’Ndlende, igniting a powerful and emotionally charged battle over leadership, loyalty, and legacy. His arrival sparks a major shift in authority within KwaMashu."

The fourth actor that joined the cast is Thulani Mtsweni as Pondo, who will first appear on 24 April.

Pondo is described as "an old-school charmer with a loud, funny, and charismatic personality".

"Pondo’s easy-going nature masks a past defined by avoidance and unfinished business. Years ago, he cowardly fled a relationship, unable to face the responsibility of fatherhood that followed."

"Now resurfacing in the hostel, Pondo forms an unexpected bond with one of Izinsizwa, unaware of the deeper connection that ties them. His return sets the stage for a layered and emotional storyline, as long-buried truths begin to surface and demand accountability."

Ofentse Thinane, SABC1 channel head, speaking about the new Uzalo cast additions, says the channel is "Looking forward to the powerful moments and layered relationships you'll create".

David Mukwevho, Uzalo series producer, says "Every new character we introduce brings something meaningful to the story".

"This season, viewers can expect more heart, more tension and the kind of honest storytelling that continues to keep Uzalo close to so many South Africans."

"We invite our loyal viewers to join us for another thrilling season. Your unwavering support fuels our passion, and in season 12, we commit to bringing even more drama and excitement".

BREAKING. DJ Warras (40) murdered in Johannesburg

by Thinus Ferreira

Warrick Stock - the South African radio and club DJ and TV presenter, VIP protection service owner and podcaster known as DJ Warras - was shot and murdered on Tuesday afternoon in Johannesburg. He was 40.

Stock, a former 5FM and Cliff Central producer, and also known as Shady Lurker, was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon on the corner of Von Wielligh and Commissioner Street in Johannesburg in front of the Carlton Centre.

According to Xolani Fihla, superintendent of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), "a shooting incident that happened this afternoon in the Johannesburg CBD".

"JMPD officers were first respondents to the incident when they were stopped by members of public who alerted them to the shooting."

"Currently, as a JMPD we don't have any information regarding the incident or the victim. And the matter will be criminally investigated by the South African Police Service, who will then shed better information regarding the incident."

The area was cordoned off by yellow police tape as Warrick Stock's lifeless body lay on the scene close to an alleged hijacked building.

According to the police, DJ Warras was approached by three suspects who opened fire on him, shot him dead and then fled.

On social media, Stock's friend and businessman Rob Hersov said his friend was murdered.

"He was murdered today in Johannesburg. I just want to say he is the most loving, compassionate, friendly, honest, open, decent human being, and it is a tragedy beyond belief. Warras, we love you, we miss you, may you rest in peace, brother."

Days ago, DJ Warras - who is also the owner of JT VIP: Elite Guarding & VIP Protection Services, a security company that handles VIP protection and building protection - criticised Rachel Kolisi's upcoming documentary film, Falling forward, claiming that the ex of South African Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi was trying to cash in on the breakdown of their marriage.

"I find this woman insufferable, bro, we get it - you got divorced! Sorry! But now it's become her whole identity, she just wants everyone to feel sorry for how heartbroken she is," he noted.

"F- sakes, what happened to keeping quiet and fading into the background? Dealing with the matter privately and putting on a brave face in public, because you have children, woman!" DJ Warras said.

Warrick Stock, who was born in Durban, never knew his father and was raised by his grandparents and mother, moved to Johannesburg as a teenager.

Stock started working at the Yfm radio station in 2008 where he did various shifts, after which he moved to the SABC's 5FM radio station as a DJ.

In September 2012, after also playing the club DJ circuit, DJ Warras made the jump to television as the new co-host together with Luthando Shosha of SABC1's music magazine show Live AMP from the 14th season.

Four years later in 2016, Warrick Stock who is a dad of three sons, became one of the presenters of the lifestyle magazine series The Man Cave on SABC3 for that show's 5th, 6th and 7th seasons.

In March 2024 DJ Warras started The Shady PHodcast on The Real Network with Phind'Gcobe "DJ PH" Madubela.

In October 2025, DJ Warras started as the presenter of the new reality show Ngicel'iVisa on MultiChoice and M-Net's Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) channel, noting that it "wasn't trash TV".

"We've done our research and the show is in line with what DStv subscribers actually want to see. What's happening on Ngicel'iVisa could easily happen to you or me - it's real life!"

Coincidentally, the new episode 11 out of 13 of Ngicel'iVisa will air tonight at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic.

TVwithThinus asked Mzansi Magic for comment on the death of DJ Warras on Tuesday afternoon and whether the season of Ngicel'iVisa completed filming with Warras as presenter.

Shirley Adonisi, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net, said "It is with sadness that we, as Mzansi Magic, extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of the talented and charismatic Warrick Stock better known as DJ Warras".

"DJ Warras was a vibrant member of our Mzansi Magic family, currently hosting our reality show, Ngicel’ iVisa."

"His natural ability to mediate sometimes complex human emotions with wit and sincerity, made him the perfect host for the show. His contribution to our sister channel, Channel O (DStv 320) was also instrumental in helping shape Mzansi’s urban music landscape and his on-screen presence was testament to his legacy in the local entertainment industry."

"DJ Warras was more than just a face of a reality series, he was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen."

"His dedication to creativity left an indelible mark on our channels. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his friends, family and all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time."

A decade ago, DJ Warras told Move!-magazine "I passed matric with three A's and B's through the guidance of my grandparents, whom I stayed with".

"My grandfather insisted I educate myself so that I could be able to do everything for myself. I really looked up to him and that's why I am the person I am today. I turned out to be responsible and it's all because of the people who raised me, and for that I am forever grateful."

DJ Warras said that being a father made him more cautious since his sons "are my life".

"Being a father has taught me to be more responsible and cautious. Even though I am no longer with the mother of one of my sons, we are doing a great job in taking care of our child."

PEU Communications switches filming of SABC1's Skeem Saam from Sasani Studios to SABC's Henley

Thinus Ferreira

Skeem Saam is no longer filmed at Sasani Studios but at the SABC's Henley studio facilities in Auckland Park as part of the South African public broadcaster's new initiative to move productions to in-house studio space in the SABC's ongoing cost-cutting measures.

From September, SABC1's Skeem Saam is filmed at the SABC and no longer at eMedia Holdings' Sasani Studios in Highlands North in Johannesburg where the show was produced for decades.

The move is unrelated to the Skeem Saam on-set fire in February at Sasani Studios that saw two crew members injured and hospitalised.

The SABC started looking into bringing more of its productions in-house in 2024 to save costs.

As Skeem Saam is concerned, the first phase of the transition was done and completed in November last year when Skeem Saam's post-production operations moved to the SABC.

The SABC, in its latest 2024/'25 annual report, states that Skeem Saam's full studio move from Sasani Studios to the SABC was scheduled to be completed by September 2025.

"Bringing these and other productions in-house will help the business reduce costs previously spent on third parties," the SABC notes.

PEU Communications told TVwithThinus that Skeem Saam "officially transitioned its production from Sasani Studios to the SABC in Auckland Park officially on 1 September. We are now fully operating from the SABC studio space and the move has gone smoothly, with everyone well settled in".

How SABC TV under-delivers in languages besides English in prime time on SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 - and why

Thinus Ferreira

South Africa's public broadcaster far under-delivers on the required quota of programming on SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 that it is supposed to broadcast during prime time.

The SABC is mandated by the regulator, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), to broadcast a certain number of hours during prime time in languages other than English.

The SABC, according to the SABC's 2024/'25 annual report, fails to do this and is in breach of the quotas set in this regard by Icasa.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 18:12 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC1. Yet SABC1 only managed to broadcast 6:56 hours.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 19:36 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC2. Yet SABC2 only managed to broadcast 4:03 hours.

The SABC is supposed to broadcast 10:06 hours per week during prime time in languages other than English on SABC3. Yet SABC3 only managed to broadcast a paltry 3:58 hours.

According to Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, the financially struggling public broadcaster doesn't have the money to acquire and make the content in other languages in order to reach these Icasa quotas.

Nomsa Chabeli told parliament's portfolio committee on communications that SABC1 and SABC2 as the "bedrock of our TV business in revenue and audience underperforms".

In May, SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli said that "Come August, we are launching a new telenovela called Pimville on SABC2, and based on that we will be really driving that audience share back to SABC2".

This didn't happen and Nomsa Chabeli said nothing about it again.

In a media query last week the SABC was asked why Pimville Queens failed to start on SABC2 in August and why there haven't been any further updates about this. The SABC didn't respond to the media query.

'Severe cash-flow contraints': Stained Glass TV forced to shut down production on SABC1's Uzalo over non-payment, 186 cast and crew told filming is paused 'with immediate effect'

by Thinus Ferreira

The biggest TV show on South African television has been forced to shut down production indefinitely due to non-payment by the SABC, with the Durban-based Stained Glass TV that has been forced to end production of Uzalo due to cash-flow problems impacting more than 56 cast members and 133 crew.

Stained Glass TV produces Uzalo for the South African public broadcaster, but also since earlier this year the Skeem Saam timeslot replacement since late-April on SABC1, Amalanga Awafani, which is also set and produced in KwaZulu-Natal.

It's not yet known whether Stained Glass TV has been forced to also shutter production on Amalanga Awafani

"Dear team, we regret to inform you that, due to severe cash-flow constraints, we are compelled to pause production with immediate effect," co-executive producers Gugu Zuma-Ncube, Pepsi Pokane and co-owner Theo Moodley told the Uzalo cast and crew in an internal memo on Monday 4 August.

"Please know that we are actively engaging with the SABC to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible. We understand the impact this has on each of you and remain committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops."

"We are deeply grateful for your unwavering passion, professionalism, and dedication to this special production. Your contribution continues to inspire us, and we are doing everything in our power to get back on track."

Stained Glass Productions was asked for comment, when its cash-flow problems with Uzalo started and what led to it, when it last received payment from the SABC, when it was last supposed to get paid by the broadcaster, as well as how and possible when Stained Glass TV sees the money crisis and production shutdown getting resolved.

Stained Glass TV's answers will be added here once received.

The SABC was also asked in a media query about Uzalo's production shutdown due to cash-flow problems and comment will be added here when received.

Stained Glass TV responded with a statement, passed along from the SABC, saying: "There is no production break on Uzalo, and production continues as scheduled. The SABC remains committed to its partnership with the production company, Stained Glass, and values the continued contribution of the cast and crew."

"As a matter of principle, the SABC does not discuss the details of contractual agreements in the public domain."

Stained Glass TV was asked if there were no production break, why were the Uzalo cast and crew told that production is being paused, but the production company declined to provide an answer.

An insider told and confirmed to TVwithThinus that production crew didn't get paid and were told that production is stopping despite the spin that the SABC might try to put on it to keep the news from being public within the production industry.

Another source said the SABC has been making late payments to Stained Glass TV for Uzalo quite a while, although the production company them took on additional work with Amalanga Awafani.

"People are not worried that Uzalo will shut down in the sense of going off air, but it's a worry about constantly wondering if you're really going to get paid."

Uzalo is the latest in a string of SABC shows that have been forced to literally shut down production over the past while after production companies have not being paid as contractually agreed by the financially struggling South African public broadcaster.

Before Uzalo, shows like 7de Laan, The Estate, Skeem Saam and Muvhango airing across SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3 have shuttered production after the SABC failed to pay on time.

Just this year, Skeem Saam and Muvhango joined Uzalo in halting production in 2025 over non-payment.

Meanwhile, Kew Productions took the SABC to court over its non-payment and had to sue the broadcaster this year just to get paid what it was owed for the unpaid part of a R10 million contract for seasons 12, 13 and 14 of the travelogue series Voetspore that used to be on SABC2.

The major crisis is waiting to be resolved by Maijang Mpherwane who has just returned since August to the SABC as the broadcaster's new head of video entertainment, with the Uzalo production shutdown that is his first big schedule stability headache.

Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO, told parliament recently that the SABC is prioritising paying the parastatal signal distributor Sentech first, which it owes more than R1 billion in outstanding debt.

It means that some production companies are underpaid less than what they are owed, or nothing.

"We pay Sentech first before we pay any of our service producers, meaning that producers come after the Sentech payment," Nomsa Chabeli said.

SABC2 and SABC3 to remain loss-making as South Africa's public broadcaster wants to position SABC+ as 'flagship platform'

Thinus Ferreira

According to the struggling South African public broadcaster's latest 5-year strategic corporate plan its SABC2 and SABC3 TV channels will remain loss-making, while it plans a pivot to position its streaming service SABC+ as its "flagship platform going forward".

The technically insolvent SABC plans to spend 86% more in 2026 on consultants and legal fees,239% more on market research and 260% more on production expenses.

Meanwhile two of its three main TV channels - SABC2 and SABC3 - will continue to run at a loss, with SABC1 that has to carry the weight of "subsidising" the two loss making channels.

This is also the reason why the SABC is more hesitant to tamper or change the SABC1 schedule and programming line-up, and more willing to do that with SABC2 and SABC3.

With no further bailouts forthcoming from the South African government, the SABC is looking at other possible resources, including signing a loan with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in 2026 to produce new content.

The interest on this loan, should the SABC sign a deal with the IDC in 2026, will amount to R29 million.

"The biggest challenge that we've got is that really our inability to fund compelling new content," says Nomsa Chabeli, SABC CEO. "Our assets are deteriorating. For example, the SABC has not been able to install new lifts in 55 years."

Nomsa Chabeli says the SABC has been slow in monetising SABC+ as its streaming service but the broadcaster is pivoting to generate more money through SABC Plus.

"We are looking going forward that SABC+ is going to be a standalone business unit in its own right with dedicated resources because to compete in the streaming world, we really need to focus and be more deliberate on how we take this to market and monetise this."

According to her, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime don't just make money from new content, but also by purchasing old programmes from other broadcasters.

"The catalogue is very critical and we are going to ensure that we exploit it not just for ourselves but then be able to license it globally to other streaming services."

The SABC aims to grow SABC+'s registered users to 1.4 million this year, to 2.2 million in 2027 and 3.1 million by 2028. It currently has about 850,000 registered users.

Tendai Matore, SABC acting chief financial officer, says the public broadcaster is planning on an increase of 86% to R127 million in "professional fees" due to a drastic increase in the money spent on consultants, audit fees and legal fees.

According to him, the SABC also plans to increase production expenses by 260% to R29.6 million, with an increase of 208% to R98.9 million in the cost of new media productions.

The SABC's total marketing costs next year will increase by 33% more than the current forecast.

Most of this spending is allocated for the SABC radio division for "awards shows", like this past weekend's 19th Metro FM Music Awards, which is "income-generating" according to the broadcaster.

The SABC is also forging ahead with setting up its own satellite-TV project, similar to MultiChoice's DStv but more aligned with eMedia's Openview where a customer buys a decoder once, with no subscription fee to get access to a set of free TV channels.

Kathutshelo Ramukumba, SABC chairperson, says the broadcaster now wants to work with the likes of MultiChoice, Primedia, as well as Netflix and VIU which are competitors, to "share content".

"We are seeking partnerships with organisations that traditionally would be viewed as competition for the SABC. This includes MultiChoice; also streaming services like VIU, Netflix and all the rest."

Peu Communications has resumed filming of the SABC1 weekday soap Skeem Saam after filming shut down following an on-set fire that saw two crew members injured and hospitalised.

Sasani Studios in Highlands North in Johannesburg belong to eMedia Holdings, with Peu Communication Solutions that is the production company renting space on the lot where Skeem Saam is filmed.

Sasani Studios is also home to other shows like e.tv's Scandal! and kykNET's Diepe Waters.

The Sasani Studios fire broke out on Saturday 22 February.

Sumaja Mogola, Skeem Saam publicist, told TVwithThinus that Skeem Saam resumed filming on the Tuesday thereafter on 25 February.

"A part of the studio was damaged, however we were still able to resume our usual shooting scheduling. We don't have a timeline, nor do we have the costs incurred with regards to the repairs."

Mmoni Seapolelo, SABC spokesperson, didn't respond to any media enquiries which were made since last week and this week about the Skeem Saam fire, when filming would resume, which sets of the show were damaged, and what the extent of the fire damage is.

eMedia Holdings last week told TVwithThinus in response to a media query that the fire at Sasani Studios "is an ongoing investigation and we cannot comment at this time".

Amalanga Awafani telenovela from Stained Glass TV to fill SABC1's former Skeem Saam timeslot from April

by Thinus Ferreira

After filling the 18:30 weekday timeslot on SABC1 with repeats that caused a ratings drop since new first-run content wasn't available a year ago, the SABC now plans to start a new telenovela, Amalanga Awafani from April.

Amalanga Awafani, loosely translated as "the days are not the same", is produced for SABC1 by Stained Glass TV, the production company also responsible for Uzalo on SABC1 as well as series on both MultiChoice's Showmax and for Netflix South Africa.

The SABC provided no basic casting, crew, or episode order information.

In a logline the SABC describes Amalanga Awafani as "about choices and desires".

"If you suddenly came into some extra millions, what would you buy? A new car, luxury fashion, high-end appliances, or the best experiences money can afford?"

According to SABC1, Amalanga Awafani "promises to be a socially relevant offering that resonates with a wide demographic, spanning rural, peri-urban, and urban audiences. The drama will unveil talent, introduce new characters, and leave viewers intrigued and on the edge of their seats".
