South African viewers to watch their first Daytime Emmy Awards ever - and live - but it won't be on South African television.

South Africans will be able to watch their first American Daytime Emmy Awards - and live - when the 41st Daytime Emmy Awards takes place on Sunday 22 June in Los Angeles - but they will watch the 2 hour live red carpet coverage and awards show free and online at daytimeemmys.net.

Although TV soaps remain a big and popular genre on South African television with several American soaps shown on various TV channels, neither the SABC, e.tv nor M-Net ever bothered to try and acquire the broadcasting rights to the Daytime Emmy Awards for South African viewers.

A large number of America stars are nominated who are well-known faces on South African television across a large number of TV channels - both on public broadcasting like the SABC and e.tv as well as on pay-TV broadcasters and platforms such M-Net and MultiChoice's DStv.

South Africans will now, for the first time ever, be able to watch the Daytime Emmy Awards - and live - in a similar way as the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Academy Awards which has been shown on M-Net for over two decades.

South Africans will be able to tune in for the internet live stream of the 41st Daytime Emmys which will be available worldwide without restrictions, starting with a 2 hour red carpet show from 00:00 (South African time) on Monday morning 23 June, and with the award show starting at 02:00 on Monday morning 23 June.

South Africans will also be able to watch the 41st Daytime Emmy Awards later on YouTube.

Comedian Kathy Griffin will be the host of the award show organised by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and taking place from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

Awards will be handed out in 25 categories, including some new categories.

South African TV viewers will be familiar with a slew of American TV programmes nominated, ranging from The Bold and the Beautiful (SABC3), Days of Our Lives (SABC3), The Young and the Restless (e.tv), Sofia the First (Disney Channel, DStv), The Fairly OddParents (Nickelodeon, DStv), Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (Nickelodeon, DStv), SpongeBob Squarepants (Nickelodeon, DStv), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nickelodeon, DStv), Young Justice (Cartoon Network, DStv), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Nickelodeon, DStv), The Dr Oz Show (SABC3), Dr. Phil (SABC2), Steve Harvey (SABC1; Mzansi Magic, DStv), Ellen (M-Net Series Reality, DStv), The Talk (M-Net), E!
