BREAKING. SABC on the passing of Alyce Chavunduka: 'Her contribution to the SABC and influence she had on inspiring black women will never be forgotten'.

Responding to a media enquiry made by TV with Thinus on Monday night regarding the death of the former SABC TV news anchor Alyce Chavunduka, the SABC says the public broadcaster "is saddened by the untimely passing of Alyce Chavunduka, a celebrated TV and radio star".

Alyce Chavunduka died on Sunday following an epileptic seizure. She was the first black female TV news anchor on the SABC's then "white" TV1 channel, and also the first black woman to join the SABC's then white morning breakfast TV show Good Morning South Africa at the age of 23 in 1992.

In response to a media enquiry the SABC says Alyce Chavunduka "played a pivotal role at a critical time when the then channel TV1, and indeed the whole organisation was undergoing a transformation process, as the country was carving itself into an inclusive and democractic society".

"Her demeanour and high level of professionalism carried her through and most importantly, her contribution to the SABC and influence she had on inspiring black women to penetrate the broadcasting industry will never be forgotten," says the SABC.

"The SABC board, management and staff send its sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and friends."
