SABC on the death of Nelson Mandela: 'We can attribute our transformation to being a public broadcaster to the contribution he made.'
It took the SABC until 15:00 on Friday the day after Nelson Mandela died,long after other broadcasters and South Africa's TV industry responded, to issue a public statement, but finally did so.
Besides the statement the SABC has not released any specific programming and coverage details, despite numerous, ongoing requests since Thursday, from multiple publications and journalists.
"The SABC joins the world in mourning the incredible loss of a global icon, a noble peace prize laureate and champion for children's rights, Nelson Mandela," the SABC says in a statement.
"The SABC board, management and staff send their deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficut time. His undeniable committment to equality and humanity has transformed and touched the universe in an unexplainable and remarkable manner."
"We can attribute our transformation to being a public service broadcaster to the contribution he made," says Zandile Tshabalala, SABC board chairperson.
"The SABC remains committed in leading and telling the Mandela story to the world to preserve his legac for generations to come."
