BREAKING. Lulama Mokhobo appointed as the new group CEO of the SABC; back at public broadcaster after she resigned in June 2010.

Lulama Mokhobo is back at the SABC and has been appointed as the new group CEO of the SABC for a fixed term of 5 years after she left the South African public broadcaster in June 2010 months before her contract was set to expire and where she was the head of public broadcasting services.

She immediately replaces Phil Molefe as the acting group CEO (as well as Hlaudi Motsoeneng who also stood in last year) at South Africa's public broadcaster.

The SABC haven't (yet?) issued any press release or statement regarding the appointment of the corporation's new group CEO.

Lulama Mokhobo shocked the mining industry last week with her sudden resignation with immediate effect as chairperson of Miranda Minerals, of course to become the new group CEO of the SABC.

The group CEO position at the struggling public broadcaster is one of many high level SABC executive positions that's been filled for months with rudderless acting executives. Lulama Mokhobo's appointment, after a recommendation by the SABC board, was rubber stamped by department of communications and South Africa's new minister of communications, Dina Pule.

Lulama Mokhobo worked at the SABC for almost 5 years and was previously the SABC's group executive for public broadcasting services. She now fills a highly contentious position within the broadcaster for another 5 year term.

None of any in a long line of the previous group CEO's at the SABC left the broadcaster on good terms, out of their own choice, or without a golden handshake and it will remain to be seen if Lulama Mokhobo would be able to break the ''SABC group CEO position curse''.

Lulama Mokhobo first joined the SABC in 2005 as head of public broadcasting services and later became the group executive for public broadcasting services looking after SABC1 and SABC2 and several of the SABC's radio stations.

Prior to joining the SABC in 2005 Lulama Mokhobo ran the PR divisions of Eskom, the South African Post Office and DaimlerChrysler South Africa and is a former CEO of Urban Brew Studios. She also worked on the start-up of the now-defunct BopTV and used to be a director of e.tv.
