MEDIA MONITORING AFRICA ON THE SABC SCANDAL: 'It defies belief that 4 years later the SABC has no group CEO, CFO or CEO.'

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) in a strongly-worded statement says its ''deply concerned'' by the ongoing governance crises at the SABC.

The MMA is the latest public pressure group weighing in on the shocking events rocking the SABC's upper echelon of executive management where Robin Nicholson just got dumped as the acting group CEO, where Phil Molefe was suddenly appointed as the new acting group CEO, and where Peter Harris suddenly resigned as a SABC board member.

''Despite various attempts to bring stability [to the SABC] we seem to be little further than where we were some three years ago, in terms of fundamentally addressing corporate governance issues,'' says the MMA which says it believes ''that the appointment of the group CEO should be made by the SABC board alone''.

''The MMA is especially concerned with the manner in which the SABC board, the minister of communications and the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications have reportedly handled this latest crisis at the SABC.''

''It defies belief that four years after the leadership crisis involving the then group CEO Dali Mpofu, the minister of communications and the SABC board that we have a public broadcaster which has no full time, formally appointed group CEO, chief financial officer (CFO) or CEO,'' says MMA. ''There is a  clear sign of a governance crisis at the SABC and the SABC board, the minister of communications and the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee must all shoulder some responsibility for this latest turn of events.''

The MMA says it's ''deeply concerned by the lack of communication on these issues, with ordinary members of the public having little option but to rely on print media for information about what has been happening at the SABC.''
