M-Net City for local shows? More genre-specific M-Net Movies channels? What M-Net is mulling over at the moment.

You're reading it here first.

First off, nothing of the following I've confirmed with M-Net officially but is all information I've put together from a myriad of insider sources who are usually and have over a long time been very credible. Also, nothing is specific and specifically time-linked, but here according to them is more of what the Magic factory in Randburg is mulling over and playing with.

It would see as if M-Net is contemplating the creation of a channel called M-Net City (M City? M Citi? M-Net Citi?) that could actually serve as a more ''localized'' M-Net, sources say. The idea is that M-Net (DStv 101) would remain the premium pay TV channel showing all the hottest and latest international shows, while some of the local, lesser performing shows (viewership wise) would be moved to M-Net City. The best local performers like Carte Blanche and reality shows like Idols would still remain on M-Net however. Several mentioned the ''Sky'' model in Britain (referring to BSkyB's premium channels model) that M-Net is taking some cues from at the moment.  Intriguing idea.

Then I was also told that the various M-Net Movies channels might in future become movie genre specific channels, for instance - and this is me, not one of the sources - M-Net Movies 1 for just action movies, an M-Net Movies 2 for just drama. Also, sources again are telling me there's possibly more M-Net Movies channels in the works, like M-Net Movies 3 and M-Net Movies 4 which are being considered that would then of course all be thematic movie channels. And at this stage it would seem as if M-Net Series (DStv 110) is at the front of the race to become the next high definition (HD) simulcast channel on Dstv, probably called M-Net Series HD.
