TOLDYA! New SABC board members unhappy with appointment of Solly Mokoetle in ''flawed'' Sunday Times story.

It must be a slow weekend. The Sunday Times for today's paper has souped up an old story with old news and unnamed sources (or is it just one?) that in my view is not fair towards the SABC, is journalistically speaking a flawed piece of work and contains mistakes. In my opinion it should have been done with stronger journalistic oversight.

According to The Sunday Times the new permament board (or at least one member) of the SABC is allegedly unhappy that they didn't get to do the appointment of the new CEO themselves - which happens to be Solly Mokoetle.

The story reports that Solly Mokoetle was excorted out of the SABC a few years ago. I already wrote about that on 16 December RIGHT HERE with the news of the announcement of his appointment.

Then the story also has reaction from the TV Industry Emergency Coalition (TVIEC). Also OLD NEWS. I had that already RIGHT HERE on 18 December.

Click on READ MORE below to read my opinion and analysis of why I think it's NOT a sound piece of journalism.
The story about the SABC by journalist Charles Molele doesn't identify the SABC board member(s?), although there is no apparent reason for the person(s) NOT to be identified. I wonder why? Is the person(s) scared of being victimised? By allowing this anonymous source(s), it's my opinion that The Sunday Times allows the potential for personal mud slinging or people within the SABC to use the media for their own personal agenda setting.

In my opinion the SABC board operates ''above'' Solly Mokoetle, and SABC board members who talk about each other, or about other ranking members within the SABC should do so on the record, or their quotes should not be used. They can remain anonymous when they talk about the SABC in general, or about the problems within the board itself or within the corporation.

It's also unclear how many members of the new SABC board holds the view of the SABC board member(s) questioned for the article.

It's unclear from the article where The Sunday Times got the Gobodo report. If it was from the ''angry'' board members, I think that should have been disclosed, as it could show a personal agenda?

The article mentions two groups who ''condemned'' the appointment - but there were groups who also ''welcomed'' the appointment. There is no mention of this in the article, or anything to put the overall general sentiment regarding Solly Mokoetle's appointment from pressure and interest groups into perspective. It makes it just seem negative (which it may well be, but from reading the article, the average reader wouldn't be able to determine it).

Telkom Media ISN'T a ''television station'' - in the same way that a printing press isn't a newspaper. It's a nascent pay TV platform.

Maybe Irene Charnley should have been described as ''chairperson'' instead of ''chairman''.
