Queen Elizabeth II funeral: How to watch today's TV and live-stream coverage.

While millions of people will line the roads today in London, billions of people are expected to watch the live televised state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey today streamed online and broadcast in over 200 countries, in what is sure to set a new record for the world's most-watched TV event ever. 

The BBC is producing the bulk of today's live feed of the funeral ceremony and will be making use of a whopping 213 HD cameras placed inside Westminster Abbey, as well as St. George's Chapel and Westminster Hall, with 14 outside broadcast (OB) trucks transmitting from 10 different locations.

Here is how viewers in South Africa and across Africa can tune in:

ABC News

America's ABC News on YouTube will live stream the event starting from 11:15 with anchors David Muir and Amy Robach, along with correspondents Ian Pannell, Deborah Robert, James Longman, Maggie Rulli, Lama Hasan and Will Reeve.

Royal contributors are Omid Scobie, Robert Jobson, Imogen Lloyd Webber, Victoria Murphy and Ailsa Anderson.

Al Jazeera (DStv 406 / StarSat 257 / TelkomONE)

Al Jazeera will cover the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II live from 10:00 this morning as part of special Newshour coverage, themed "Queen Elizabeth II: A Final Farewell".

BBC World News (DStv 400 / StarSat 256)

On BBC World News coverage starts at 11:00 led by Huw Edwards, Kirsty Young, Fergal Keane, David Dimbleby and Sophie Raworth.

Allan Little will be inside Westminster Abbey with analysis from royal correspondent Jonny Dymond. From five different points along the procession route Ken Bruce, Mishal Husain, Emma Barnett, Clive Myrie, Adele Roberts, John Murray, Mike Costello, Rachel Burden, Nuala McGovern, Chris Mason, Jamie Coomarasamy, Andrea Catherwood and James Naughtie will do reporting and commentary.

Britbox will stream live coverage of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, starting today at 10:30. Coverage will also be available to stream on-demand on Tuesday.

Live-streamed on cbsnews.com and YouTube, Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell will anchor a CBS News Special Report live from London, with royal contributors Tina Brown, Julian Payne, Roya Nikkhah, Amanda Foreman and the former BBC royal correspondent Wesley Kerr.

Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett will be anchoring live from London with special coverage kicking off at 11:00 today, with Christiane Amanpour, Max Foster and Richard Quest in London.

Like the BBC, CNN has reporters stationed throughout London, including at Westminster Abbey and along the procession route and at Windsor Castle.

Nada Bashir, Matthew Chance, Bianca Nobilo, Nic Robertson, Isa Soares, Anna Stewart and Clarissa Ward will provide commentary and reports, with Zain Asher and Julia Chatterley covering from New York.

euronews will cover the funeral proceedings of Queen Elizabeth live on the channel as well as live-streamed on its website from 11:00.

FOX News will start live coverage at 10:00 today, with Martha MacCallum anchoring from The Canada Gate at Buckingham Palace. She will be joined by Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt and the British commentator Piers Morgan.

France24 will broadcast the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II live on its TV news channel, with "special edition" live coverage also streamed from 10:00 this morning on France24's YouTube feed.

MSNBC (StarSat 263)

MSNBC's live coverage will start at 09:00 today with Chris Jansing anchoring. From 11:00 Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist and Katty Kay will anchor from London. From 16:00 Andrea Mitchell, Katy Tur and Chris Jansing will anchor MSNBC's special coverage.

NBC News Now

NBC News Now on YouTube and on nbcnews.com will live-stream the funeral ceremony as well, with Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Lester Holt anchor special live coverage of the funeral services starting at 11:00 today.

Showmax

Subscribers of MultiChoice's video streaming service across sub-Saharan Africa will be able to live-stream Queen Elizabeth II's on the BBC World News TV channel made available for free until 23 September. The live news channel is available to all Showmax subscribers regardless of their plan.

Sky News (DStv 402)

Sky News starts its special coverage today at 8:00 with anchor Kay Burley live at Westminster Abbey outlining how the day will unfold, with the channel's live feed also available on YouTube.

Anchors Anna Botting and Dermot Murnaghan start at 10:00 and will anchor for the day, with Anna Botting live from Westminster and Dermot Murnaghan reporting live from Windsor Castle as the procession begins to make its way from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch, before concluding at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Sky News royal events commentator Alastair Bruce will provide analyses throughout the day. Kay Burley, Sarah Jane Mee and Gillian Joseph will be in the crowds in London and at Windsor Castle throughout the day.

Jayne Secker will be live from Windsor Caste at 18:00. Mark Austin will be anchoring from 20:00 as Sky News reflects on the day from Buckingham Palace with a look back at the events and key moments. 

Sky News will broadcast a round-up show of the day's proceedings and highlights at 22:00 tonight with Johnathan Samuels. Anna Botting will conclude coverage with the News at Ten at 23:00 South African time, live from Buckingham Palace.

MultiChoice adds the CBS Justice and CuriosityStream channels; returns euronews to Southern Africa.

MultiChoice is adding two further TV channels to DStv including CBS Justice and CuriosityStream and is returning the TV news euronews.

As a crime channel CBS Justice (DStv 170) will replace A+E Networks UK's Crime+Investigation Network and joins the existing channels set supplied by AMC Networks International UK (AMCNI) and CBS Studios International.

CuriosityStream (DStv 185), launched by John Hendricks who was the founder of the Discovery Channel, is a factual entertainment channel.

euronews (DStv 414) which used to be on DStv and was re-added in sub-Saharan Africa outside of Southern Africa after it was removed a few years ago, is being returned for DStv subscribers in South Africa and Southern Africa.

The three channels will become available from 21 November.

One of the best things about Cell C's new streaming service, black, is its strong, impressive carousel of TV news channels, several carried in HD.

If you thought that MultiChoice had locked up the status quo on DStv as far as the Rubik's Cube of linear TV news channels are concerned more than a decade ago, a very pleasant and unsuspecting surprise awaits with the strong, impressive and well-balanced set of TV news channels assembled on Cell C black.

Cell C's newly launched subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming service, black, offers linear TV channels - something that Netflix, Naspers' Showmax and Amazon Prime Video do not.

Quite interestingly, the linear TV channels include a set of TV news channels, which seen in the totality of this offering, actually comes very close in rivaling the TV news channel offering provided by MultiChoice on DStv.

For Cell C black to have assembled this many TV news channels - several of which get an above average grade in terms of news content, news spread, on-air look and production values - gives black a very high score on its TV news offering for an out-of-the-box, just-launched service.

It shows how bad TopTV (now StarSat) was when it launched and had a paltry news offering, with Cell C black that shows how it is possible to put together a decent linear TV news channel offering even in the face of competing pay-TV services.

Granted, TV news channels do not play as big a factor in the overall unique selling proposition of a pay-TV service like lets say, general entertainment and sport channels do, but for this TV critic at least, TV news channels are as much and closely watched and tracked, and are as important.

Keep in mind that the FOX News Channel, also available on StarSat from China's StarTimes Media SA and On Digital Media (ODM), is carried on Cell C black but that it is blocked - unless you pay another R99 per month to get access to all of the FOX Networks Group Africa (FNG Africa) supplied channels.

Cell C black offers a very impressive line-up of TV news channels - several of which are streamed in high definition (HD).

(It also means that Cell C black has more TV news channels in HD than on DStv!)

Cell C black carries BBC World News (501), FOX News Channel (502), Al Jazeera (503), euronews HD (504), its new Africa sister africanews (505), Deutsche Welle (506), France24 (507), TRT World HD (508), Russia Today HD (509), Bloomberg HD (511) and CNBC Africa (512).

Weirdly Cell C and Cell C black hasn't bothered to say a single thing about its news channels offering to the media - something that is actually a very strong selling point.

This TV critic had to activate the service and start scrolling through the linear TV channel offering on the blackBOX to discover channels like TRT World - and to have a jaw-dropper moment when I saw that it streams in HD, just like Bloomberg and Russia Today.

With this offering, no big international news event or some big Africa news event will happen without a user of Cell C black not being able to watch and keep up with all the news about it.

BBC World News is already carried on DStv, StarSat and OpenView HD (OVHD) from eMedia Investment's Platco Digital.

Al Jazeera and Bloomberg (but not in HD) are already carried on both DStv and StarSat.

DStv also has Deutsche Welle and France24 but only on special language packages, and also carries Russia Today (but not in HD) and CNBC Africa.

StarSat also has FOX News Channel and France24.

It's striking that Cell C worked to get the Turkish English-language TRT World on its service, as well as several channels in HD.

It feels weirdly wonderful watching Bloomberg and euronews and TRT World in crystal-clear high definition and to think that this is being watched on a big-screen TV set ... but is being streamed through data rather than coming through a satellite dish.

Noteworthy is that Cell C black decided to place BBC World News first as the frontload news channel, just like MultiChoice did with DStv, and is also the case on StarSat and OpenView HD.

Does it mean that every pay-TV service considers BBC World News the most proper international TV news channel of record?

DStv had euronews but dropped it. It means that Cell C "exclusively" for the moment carries euronews, africanews and TRT World.

In fact, Cell C black will forever hold the footnote as being first to ever make the africanews and TRT World news channels available as linear TV channels in South Africa on a pay-TV service.

Yet another pan-African TV news channel, africanews, launches across Africa; euronews' new African sister channel now streaming live for free online.

Yet another pan-African TV news channel, africanews, launched across the African continent today at 17:00 with africanews that can be watched not only on TV in some African countries (South Africa excluded) but is also streaming for free in SD or HD on its website.

Africanews, broadcasting its TV news channel in English and French and anchored in its Pointe Noire studios in Congo-Brazzaville, is an offshoot of the European euronews that MultiChoice carried on DStv and then dumped in late 2014 after 6 years.

With Sabido and eMedia Investments' eNCA (DStv 403) channel that gave up on self sourced, on the ground reporting in Africa in 2015, and with the Nigerian-based Arise TV news channel that abruptly imploded and went off the air in January, true pan-African channels like africanews are looking to find audiences who want to see and hear first-hand reporting on what is really happening in various African countries.

africanews will primarily be competition for China's CCTV News (DStv 409 / StarSat 266), as well as for the Lagos anchored TVC News (also streamed live on its website) available on StarSat channel 270 and on DStv in some countries.

Interestingly MultiChoice doesn't currently provide any true pan-African TV news channel for DStv subscribers in South Africa like TVC News or africanews.

Funnily enough, africanews in its look and on-screen presence (OSP) blatantly copies TVC News' look and colours of yellow and black.

Also not stated but very obvious is how africanews is hilariously using South Africa for the heavy lifting in its glossy africanews promo video.

It's South African places, cityscapes, buildings, people and news events that show up most prominently and takes up the most space in its glossy promo video to sell africanews' coverage of the continent and to give Africa a "progressive Western" type look, especially as far as infrastructure is concerned.

africanews kicked off with a staff of 85, representing 15 nationalities, doing rolling live news coverage and will be doing news magazine shows like Football Planet, The Global Conversation, Timeout Africa and daily focused segments on entertainment and culture and business news.

News blocks will also be segmented, for instance The Morning Call between 06:00 and 10:30 with Hannane Ferdjani and Robert K'Odingo, The Network and Business Africa.

africanews, funded through a mix of distribution and carriage agreement income, advertising and production revenues, looks to expand its language offering in future but is launching across Africa with English and French.

"It all began with the recognition that the rising African continent is an incredible source of news and that there is a great pool of talent that lacks a quality media environment," said Michael Peters, CEO of euronews and africanews.

"The question was simple," said Michael Peters in a "press conference" launch that was broadcast today on the channel and on africanews' online video feed.

"Was it like about doing like everyone else, meaning launching euronews Africa, or whether its about doing something totally different - africanews."

"africanews is the biggest bet no-one has ever done in the industry and the only stupid guy who decided to launch a new brand which is nuts - euronews. Can you imagine the amount of money, of time, of attention that you need to build a brand like euronews."

"And my decision is to say, I won't use the euronews brand like all the others are doing. I'm creating a new brand that will become the sister brand of euronews. This is a bet that no-one has done in the industry," said Michael Peters.

"We want to implement a media organisation called africanews that will be the voice of the African continent in Africa, and the rest of the world."

"africanews is here to give an African perspective about news, whether its African news or world news. This is another bet. What is a pan-African perspective? We have the same problem in Europe.What is a pan-Europe perspective?"

"You have a lot of African media who are pan-regional, rather than pan-continental. So you have a lot of pan-regional media who are extremely strong in the Francophone side of Africa, or strong in the Anglophone side of Africa, or the West of Africa, or the East of Africa."

"But until now there is no one real pan-continental brand that is able to speak to people in at least French and English and I hope soon in other languages. So we try to offer to the viewers, the consumer, a real pan-African view," said Michael Peters.

"This [africanews] is not the project of European people trying to impose any European views on the market."

"africanews will have to make money. The business plan is to be break even in 5 years time. For the launch of today we already have advertisers who trusted us.

MultiChoice dumps euronews; TV news channel on DStv will be removed on 30 November after 6 years.

MultiChoice is dumping euronews (DStv 414) from the DStv, with the European rolling 24-hour TV news channel which will be removed from 30 November from the South African satellite pay-TV platform's channel line-up.

MultiChoice decided not to renew the euronews contract and isn't giving any reasons, although the removal likely has to do with low viewership figures.

Although knowing for longer than a month that euronews which has been on DStv for 6 years, MultiChoice is telling DStv subscribers and giving them only 5 days notice about the channel being removed from DStv.

TV news channels as a subset has much lower viewership as a genre than sport, general entertainment, movies and lifestyle TV channels.

Then within the news channel's subset, TV news channels on DStv channels like euronews, CNBC Africa (DStv 410), BBC World News (DStv 400) and Al Jazeera (DStv 406) are scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to viewership and audience share.

"Although the euronews channel is no longer available in Southern Africa, DStv customers still have 16 news and commerce channels which cater for a variety of viewer tastes," says Aletta Alberts, the general manager of content for MultiChoice South Africa.

Last month, following reports that MultiChoice may look to cut TV channels from the existing DStv offering, MultiChoice said that "MultiChoice is not cutting back on channels on its DStv service".

MultiChoice said a month ago that "we constantly monitor and review the performance of the different channels on DStv as part of our ongoing drive to deliver the best entertainment to our customers. The recent launch of VUZU AMP and M-Net Edge is proof of that commitment".

euronews which was on DStv Premium was added to DStv Compact and DStv Family only in April last year.

Then euronews' Arnaud Verlhac, the deputy director for worldwide distribution at euronews still had effusive praise for MultiChoice, saying MultiChoice and euronews are "working closer and closer together".

"I am proud to announce this new proof of confidence by MultiChoice," he said last year when euronews' availability on DStv was increased in April 2013.

BREAKING. euronews to launch a new Afrocentric 24-hour TV news channel, Africanews, as a new sister TV news channel in 2015.

euronews (DStv 414) has announced that the 24-hour European-based English 24-hour TV news channel seen in South Africa on on MultiChoice's DStv, will be launching a new Afrocentric sister news channel named Africanews in 2015.

Africanews will cover African news and the African continent more in-depth and will be headquartered in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo. Together with Africanews as a TV channel, there will also be the website www.africanews.com.

Africanews will be run by 40 journalists and technicians based in Brazzaville, as well as correspondents spread across Africa to gather and report Sub-Saharan African news.

Africanews will be financed by advertising and will broadcast in English and French, with plans to include other languages such as Portuguese, Arabic and Swahili later.

Africanews plans to adhere to the same editorial charter as euronews to maintain its editorial integrity and independence. euronews and Africanews will share news.

The agreement was signed on Saturday in Brazzaville between Michael Peters, CEO of euronews, and Jean Obambi, the managing director of Télé Congo.

"Our strategic and highly ambitious project will not be a mere African 'window' made by euronews, as most international news channels do, but rather a fully-fledged Pan-African network, with editorial choices made by Africans for an African audience," says Michael Peters.

The project is backed by US journalist and expert in African affairs, Stephen Smith an American journalist and expert in African affairs and who previously worked for French titles Libération and Le Monde will help in creating Africanews as a new TV news channel.

euronews added to MultiChoice's DStv Family and DStv Compact bouquets makes the 24-hour news channel available in millions more homes.

euronews (DStv 414) is joining MultiChoice's DStv Family and DStv Compact bouquets from tomorrow, Tuesday 9 April.

The European news channel started on DStv's channel line-up seven years ago, but only as part of the DStv Premium bouquet. Now euronews will become available in millions more pay-TV households in South Africa from tomorrow.

The first carriage agreement for euronews on MultiChoice's DStv was concluded by the international distributor Thema.

"I am proud to announce this new proof of confidence by MultiChoice," says Arnaud Verlhac, the deputy director for worldwide distribution at euronews in a statement.

"Over the last seven years we have been working closer and closer together. The consequence of this collaboration is a substantial increase of our presence in South Africa, Africa's leading television market."

BREAKING. euronews news channel opening 3 new news bureaux and transforming into a worldwide news hub going 'glocal'.

euronews (DStv 414), the European 24-hour news channel which MultiChoice moved from channel 404 to channel 414 in September announced in a worldwide press conference - streamed into 20 cities and entitled "Survive and thrive in the media universe" - that the channel is going "glocal": simultaneously global and local.

euronews announced that the international news channel is transforming into a worldwide news hub and is changing its editorial news coverage model to one which will be focused on global news but tailored with specific grids and content for local audiences.

euronews is opening new news bureaux in Washington, Istanbul and Dubai, bringing the total of euronews editorial offices worldwide to 14.

euronews turns 20 in 2013 and will next year move into its modern new headquarters in Lyons. euronews also announced the opening of euronews Greece and euronews Hungary in March 2013. Each of these localised TV channels will employ 40 people.

"The media industry is radically transforming and we need to adapt," said euronews CEO Michael Peters.

"euronews must provide the good content, in the right place and at the right time on all platforms. The key objective is to meet with the users' experience. We've passed from the marketing of offer to the marketing of demand [egocasting]."

BREAKING. DStv will move euronews to channel 414 today to open up channel 404 for possibly the new SABC News channel.

MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV service will be moving Europe's euronews TV news channel at 10:00 today from channel 404 to channel 414 - the channel number change is most likely done to make space for the SABC's nascent 24-hour news channel from SABC News which would be placed on channel 404 soon.

If euronews remained on DStv channel number 404, it would have meant that the nearest next available channel number for the SABC's new news channel would have been 413 or 414 - very far away from the "ordinary" general news 24 hour news channels, decreasing potential sampling by subscribers dramatically once the channel starts.

Proxy location by channel number is extremely important for TV channels on pay-TV operator bouquets. Bloomberg Television for instance has been in a protracted court battle with Comcast to get the business news TV channel moved  on the channel line-up to next to the other news channels where the chances increase dramatically that its viewership will increase because subscribers often use the arrow button up and down to sample adjacent channels next to already existing popular TV channels.

The local South African 24 hour news channel eNCA, recently rebranded from the eNews Channel, is the most watched 24 hour news channel on all of DStv - and its located on channel 403.

If the SABC's new news channel (which is replacing the defunct SABC News International channel which limped along since it was launched in July 2007 and ran for only 2 and a half years before it was closed down after costing millions of rand) is placed on 404 is will help to drastically increase viewership  through potential sampling.

According to the SABC, South Africa's public broadcaster is able to launch the new news channel thanks to substantial investment from MultiChoice which DStv would be paying to the SABC monthly over the next 5 years. The channel will become freely available once digital terrestrial television (DTT) launches in South Africa.

If the SABC's new news channel is placed on channel 404, it will mean that DStv is putting the SABC's new news channel in direct competition with eNCA, because the two local 24 hour South African news channels will be right next to each other. By simply pressing up and down, subscribers will be able to toggle between the two offerings immediately, instead of having to press in a three-digit channel number.

No official name for the new news channel has been announced yet, which the SABC said will be starting in early September with 6 hours of news per day, looped for 24 hours.

SABC insiders working in SABC News however told me yesterday that the name SABC News 24 Hours has been or is under consideration - although I'm hearing there's been some unhappiness from some quarters over this name. SABC News staff would be working for the normal daily news bulletins as well as file stories for the 24 hour service.

The news studio for the new SABC news channel has been described to me as "looking very snazzy", and dry runs are taking place daily and every evening.

Euronews and ABC News in America to share news and correspondents like Christiane Amanpour under new news sharing agreement.

Europe's most watched international news channel, Euronews (DStv 404) just announced an agreement signed with ABC News in America which will bring news stars like Christiane Amanpour as well as American news coverage and interviews to Euronews.

Under the agreement, ABC News correspondents, experts and anchors, including Christiane Amanpour, will provide regular analysis of American politics and others news events on Euronews. Euronews will in turn provide European news coverage to ABC News in America.

BREAKING. euronews to expand its news gathering operations with several new international news bureaus.

The European TV news network euronews (DStv 404) is planning to introduce more TV reporters' faces in its famous ''raw'' news feed stories and will open new news bureaus around the world this year.

Reuters just reported that euronews which belongs to 21 European state broadcasters, plans to open new news bureaus in Paris, Dubai, Washington, Beijing, Kiev and Istanbul this year. The news network that is known for its rolling news stories without reporters' faces and just voice-overs, plan to show more presenters and will create a new 20 person news bureau in Brussels as well.
