Organisers of disastrous Thank You SABC Concert: 'We do not define success by numbers', slams 'vicious media' for making whole thing 'a Mandoza cancer story'.

Organisers of the disastrous Thank You SABC Concert that turned into a spectacular flop two weeks ago at the Orlando Stadium now say "we do not define success by numbers" and now blames the "viscious media" for turning it into a "Mandoza cancer story like when Princess Diana was chased and died".

The shocking show that was put up as a self-indulgent celebration of the controversial SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng's abrupt decision in May for 90% local music on the SABC's radio stations lurched from chaos to crisis in the few days since the concert was announced on a Tuesday for the upcoming Saturday and turned into a highly embarrassing flop that inflicted further brand damage to the SABC's already tarnished public reputation.

As artists billed to perform and even the SABC choir were no-shows at the infamous concert, artists said they were not paid and pulled out, while only around 1 000 people showed up in the stadium that can hold 40 000 people for the expensive flop that started hours late.

Before the show, organiser Mzwakhe Mbuli who did the concert with the controversial concert promotor Morris Roda, promised to "fill up the stadium and fill up the stomachs of the artists" with 100 artists - none of which were made good on.

The SABC helped to hype the "record breaking" nature of the Thank You SABC concert beforehand, with Mzwakhe Mbuli going as far as saying that "what we are doing must go to the Guinness Book of Records," because the SABC is better than CNN International, the BBC and Al Jazeera that "never had a concert where people in London or artists in London will say 'Thank you CNN or BBC".

Mzwake Mbuli is now explaining the Thank You SABC Concert failure, telling SABC News that "we do not define success by numbers".

Mzwake Mbuli has now turned around and blames a lack of sponsors for the concert's flop, telling SABC News "It is unfortunate that we did not get funding. We ended up either thinking:  Should we go ahead or not? We soldiered on; we continued".

'Vicious media turned it into a Mandoza cancer story'
Mzwake Mbuli also turned on the media in a tirade on how the media didn't cover the Thank You SABC Concert correctly.

"The media is vicious. The whole thing became a Mandoza cancer story. Not being sensitive to the family. The Mandoza cancer [was like the] Princess Diana chase until she crashed and died. Mandela it was announced long before his actual death".

"With Mandoza, the cancer thing. It was all about Mandoza is terminal. Wednesday. Thursday. Every call; email is about Mandoza. The audience, the people who attended the festival on Saturday, it was big news: 'Mandoza dead. Mandoza dead.'

'You can imagine the pressure. Then later Mandoza came. The print media on Monday asked who forced Mandoza to perform. Now then they changed the story because there was nothing tangible they could find corruption, scandal."

"Then they changed, saying the minister of communications Faith Muthambi, herself went to pick up Mandoza at home to prove and dispel the rumour that Mandoza is alive. The minister came wearing in black, she was late, she was coming from a funeral," said Mzwake Mbuli.

"Mandoza phoned after the whole hullabaloo after him having cancer, midweek, Mandoza himself called he wanted to perform. Mandoza came with his wife, with his children."

Mzwakhe Mbuli said another similar concert could take place again "provided big business, those with dollars, will come forward, and give us money upfront. Then we will book artists and celebrate".

SHOCKING FAILURE. 90% EMPTY: Expensive and badly organised Thank You SABC Music Concert a monumental flop as dismal event heaps shame on the SABC.

The shockingly bad and barely publicised Thank You SABC Concert that took place on Saturday quickly turned into a monumental flop and yet another shameful embarrassment for the SABC despite promises of free T-shirts and gifts.

The Thank You SABC Music Concert that was promised to "fill up the stadium and fill up the stomachs of the artists" started hours late with no explanation and quickly went from very bad to worse, taking the SABC's image with it.

While the Orlando Stadium can seat 40 000, barely 1 000 people showed up.

With a totally abandoned line-up, some invited artists like Jack Parow were barred from performing, waited hours and left and several promised headline artists completely ditched the hastily arranged and totally botched event where even the promised SABC Choir of Hlaudi Motsoeneng was a total no-show.

Meanwhile images of the basically empty Orlando Stadium on Saturday for the Thank You SABC Concert that was supposed to take place from 10:00 to 22:00, showed what an expensive and utter flop it turned out to be, while SABC executives, SABC News and organisers valiantly tried to spin the news and concert into success.

Industry insiders expressed shock in the week when the SABC suddenly announced the Thank You SABC Concert on Tuesday - a promised massive event that usually takes months of preparation and planning.

While the SABC in an original statement confirmed that it is paying for the expensive Thank You SABC Concert, it suddenly backtracked saying the controversial Morris Roda Productions company is responsible for the concert, while artists started saying they were not paid.

Confusion spread with very little publicity of the concert to the public and the event quickly turned into a massive organisational quagmire in the days leading up to Saturday and the resulting flop, embarrassing the SABC and damaging its already battered brand.

The Thank You SABC Concert organised by Mzwake Mbuli was supposed to have 100 South African musicians "from all genres" performing at Orlando Stadium - but it was anything but. Not only were there not 100 artists, the music was definitely not from all genres.

In the week artists slammed the SABC and organisers on SABC television during a live broadcast before they were shut down, saying "the doors are closed to us" at the SABC and wanting to know why young artists are allegedly not given exposure at the Thank You SABC Concert.

Starting more than two and a half hours late, artists like the Soweto String Quartet on Saturday afternoon performed at the Thank You SABC Concert to a virtually empty Orlando Stadium normally seating 40 000 people.

Even the SABC Choir - promised on the programme line-up which was completely useless and not followed - was a total no-show.

Meanwhile the SABC's SABC News division reporting on the event, kept to close-up angles and cropped shots on Saturday afternoon, trying to make the empty stadium look full while in reality there was no crowd.

That didn't stop some stragglers from telling the SABC during a live interview on SABC News (DStv 404) that the concert is badly organised and that the artists and organisers "have a problem with time-management".

SABC News reporter Mahlako Komane who failed to report the real news, tried to spin the news during cross-overs, and failed to hold SABC executives and organisers accountable by throwing soft questions instead of asking why the concert started hours late, why the Orlando Stadium is empty, why it was badly publicised and organised and where the promised artists are.

In a highly embarrassing interview in the almost empty stadium, the SABC executive Bessie Tugwana who was recently moved to head of the SABC's corporate affairs division, said "today the whole country is standing still, paying tribute to SABC".

"We are humbled by the gratitude and the entire SABC is here to witness this groundbreaking gratitude".

Later Mzwake Mbuli, organiser was interviewed. "Look, young and old are here," he said.

In the week Mzwake Mbuli said the concert is going to break records - so much so that it should be entered as a Guiness World Record. The concert still might - but not for the record he's thinking of.

"What we are doing must go to the Guinness Book of Records," said Mzwakhe Mbuli.

On Saturday night the SABC's controversial chief operating officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the minister of communications Faith Muthambi, and the SABC chairperson Obert Maguvhe attended a part of the event.

From the stage Obert Maguvhe bellowed: "Are you there? Are you there?"

Later Obert Maguvhe said "We want to give an assurance to you that local content is here to stay. We want to ensure that talent is unearthed, talent is developed, talent is promoted and talent is nurtured."

By 14:02 on Saturday - although the concert was billed to start at 10:00 - the SABC reported using future tense that "people are trickling into the Orlando stadium in Soweto where the much-anticipated SABC Thank You music concert will take place".

The massive failure of the Thank You SABC Music Concert was slammed by political parties, commentators and artists, while on social media people were having a field day at the SABC's expense.

"The SABC's vainly self-named Thank You SABC Concert aimed at thanking itself is a massive flop and a waste of public money. It demands investigating. We demand an investigation into the SABC's wasteful, 95% empty Thank You SABC Concert. Those responsible should pay back the money," said the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP).

Musician Jack Parow whose real name is Zander Tyler and who was asked to perform slammed the SABC, saying he couldn't perform and left "after more than an hour of trying" to get on stage.

"No one knew what was going on and made us feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome, and basically like we shouldn't be there. We came all the way and trusted your word after everyone else pulled out, and you begged us to still come," said Jack Parow.

"SABC come on. Kak swak my bru."

SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng to hold his own Thank You SABC Music Concert - with Panados - on 10 September to thank itself for 90% local music airplay.

In another bizarre turn of events at the public broadcaster, the SABC's controversial boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng is set to hold a lavish Thank You SABC Music Concert this Saturday - with Panados - organised by the SABC to thank itself and Hlaudi Motsoeneng for his idea a few months ago of enforcing 90% local music airplay on the SABC's radio stations.

Organiser Mzwakhe Mbuli said there might also be Panado pain killers and paramedics will be standing by.

The SABC wants to fill up the massive Orlando Stadium this coming Saturday 10 September and the SABC is giving away a thousand free tickets to valid SABC TV licence holders to attend the concert it is organising for itself to thank itself.

People who can't produce a valid SABC TV licence will have to pay R100 to enjoy the Thank You SABC music concert that will stretch from 10:00 to 22:00 on Saturday.

The cash-strapped SABC is paying for the little publicised concert happening this Saturday but it's not known how much the public broadcaster is spending on the celebratory hullabaloo.

Artists that will apparently appear include AKA, Mafikizolo, Rebecca Malope, Mango Groove, the Parlotones, Emtee, Kwesta, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Black Coffee and others - 100 artists in all.

The SABC is currently also supporting the three day Moshito Music Conference taking place at the SABC's Auckland Park headquarters - ironically with the theme: "Censored: When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised".

The concert follows June's tribute song to Hlaudi Motsoeneng, "Thank you, SABC" by poet Mzwakhe Mbuli that is a spectacular 6 minutes and 43 seconds long and who is also the organiser of the SABC concert for Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

"The SABC has welcomed the Thank You SABC Concert and all the artists that will perform have embraced and are proud of the public broadcaster's initiative to prioritize and support local music," says the SABC in a statement.

The SABC told viewers that the Thank You SABC Concert is to "show appreciation for the 90% local content quota that was introduced in the organisation. The concert will include all music genres from kwaito to hip-hop".

Mzwakhe Mbuli told the SABC that the SABC concert on Saturday will "fill up the stadium, fill up the stomachs of the artists and families".

Mzwakhe Mbuli said "Everybody must vote for SABC. Vote to go to the stadium. We have incentives. We will have free gifts. There will be T-shirts."

He said "If you produce your TV licence, you will enter and celebrate and see all these internationally acclaimed artists for free."

"We are promoting a brand. Even CNN or Al Jazeera or BBC has never had a concert where people in London or artists in London will say 'Thank you CNN or BBC.' So we are the only ones. So it means that what we are doing must go to the Guinness Book of Records," said Mzwakhe Mbuli.

"I think we need to organise Panados. I don't know. Paramedics will be there."
