Gus O'Brien upped as new NBCUniversal International Networks boss from April

by Thinus Ferreira

Gus O'Brien is replacing Ken Bettsteller, with NBCUniversal Media Group moving him to president of International Networks and direct-to-consumer (DTC) from 1 April, as Ken Bettsteller is replaced and shifted to an advisory role.

NBCUniversal is also expanding Hendrik McDermott's scope, who has been leading Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Networks & DTC, to now oversee all international DTC operations as managing director for international DTC & EMEA, as well as Canada.

NBCUniversal Networks & DTC runs the international versions of TV channels like Universal TV, Studio Universal, Telemundo, Bravo, DreamWorks and the aggregation service Universal+, which are available in South Africa on DStv through Canal+'s MultiChoice.

Matt Strauss, NBCUniversal Media Group chairman, in a statement in a press release, says, "Our International Networks & Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) portfolio brings some of our most beloved brands to audiences around the world, including a suite of popular networks, the hybrid linear/non-linear service Universal+, and the all-reality SVOD service Hayuu."

"Gus is a worthy successor to Ken Bettsteller – who has been a formidable leader in our company for over two decades – and I'm excited for Gus to bring his innovative leadership to the broader group, working with the international management team to further strengthen and support these brands."

BAD BRAVO IMPRESSION. NBCUniversal International Networks has launch event for DStv's E!-replacement TV channel Bravo

Thinus Ferreira

On Wednesday, NBCUniversal International Networks held a launch event for its E!-replacement channel, Bravo, in Johannesburg, for just some Johannesburg-based media and influencers.

NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-to-Consumer replaced E! with Bravo on MultiChoice's DStv channel line-up after 21 years due to two reasons.

Firstly, E! has become a zombie channel filled with repeats and little to no new content, with even E! News getting cancelled and the schedule that was shamelessly padded the last few years with shows that actually air on Bravo in the United States.

Secondly, NBCUniversal decided to get rid of its steadily worsening set of pay-TV channels - a collection that includes E! - into a new company called Versant. So, NBCUniversal no longer runs E! or wants anything to do with it.

Cue Bravo which remains within the NBCUniversal stable as one of its TV channels, as the new E! placeholder.

Bravo isn't suddenly on DStv because it's "better".

Bravo simply replaces E! because of corporate changes and decisions that watered down E! (NBCUniversal decided to no longer invest in content for E! in the way it did before), after which NBCUniversal decided to get rid of E! that it no longer considers valuable.

Indicative of the sorry state of traditional pay-TV entropy and just how far things have really fallen: Wednesday's Bravo launch event held at Four Seasons, The Westcliff in Parktown was only for Johannesburg media and influencers (and even within that, an incomplete subset with some media not even made aware something would be taking place).

In bygone years, a place like NBCUniversal International Networks - especially for the "launch" and introduction of new TV channel - would have ensured it had all relevant media there. This time - not so much.

Instead, NBCUniversal International Networks which hasn't held any upfront or even roundtable press interactions with South Africa's media in years, focused on getting "personalities" - likely social media notables who would "amplify" its Bravo launch event with tweets and Insta-posts into the ether.

What was said at Wednesday's NBCU Bravo launch with Thulane Hadebene isn't known - nothing about what happened there, was shown there, or said there, had been shared or communicated a day later by Thursday afternoon.

The media launch event included a screening of an episode of the upcoming The Real Housewives of London, as well as a question and answer session with the personalites who appear in the second season of the South African version of Dating #NoFilter South Africa.

Either Marco Giusti, senior vice president of marketing for NBCUniversal International Networks in London was physically present in person at Wednesday's Bravo Africa launch or did some pre-recorded video message, but also what he had to say was solely just for those who were physically at the channel launch event.

NBCUniversal couldn't make any of this accessible to media, or actually even worse, lacked the insight that perhaps media not physically present at Wednesday's event might have an interest, or might be instrumental in hearing what happens and is said, and reporting that out.

The last time NBCUniversal International Networks properly bothered and managed to engage the media in South Africa was exactly three years ago in October 2022 with the addition of Universal+ to DStv.

The Universal+ launch just three years ago wasn't even a TV channel "launch" - yet compare what NBCUniversal International Networks still bothered to do then and how it communicated and involved the news media, compared to now.

Since then NBCUniversal International Networks seems to have continued to devolve into a type of sad situation where it's about "the less, the better" when it comes to promotion and everything around its channels set in South Africa and Africa.

How many South Africans appear constantly across the different iterations of the Below Deck franchise (on E! and now on Bravo)? How many interviews with any of those people, or media roundtables, have appeared on been done with South African press over the past years?

And it's not for a lack of asking and trying on the part of the media.

The way that Bravo was "launched" as an E!-takeover with little regard to actually involve, communicate with and taking the broader and real media covering it, with it on a journey, further underscores the headshaking devolution and devaluing of NBCUniversal International Networks and what's left of its pay-TV brands.

What a bad first Bravo impression (that will be quite lasting).

Yet, given how NBCUniversal International Networks has drifted over recent years from trying to interact with South African media to a much more laissez-faire approach, it's a bad first impression that isn't actually surprising.

Thinking back to how NBCUniversal launched E! on DStv 21 years ago - and I was there and can fully compare - the start and launch of Bravo is regressive and perfunctory and looks very badly done.

How much has the world and technology changed since NBCUniversal launched E! in South Africa two decades ago and had a media launch event for the channel with the late Lebo Mathosa?

And yet, it's still connection - and real connection and communication that's valued, and that truly gets results.

Was it too much effort, too costly, too cumbersome and too difficult for NBCUniversal International Networks to organise a simple virtual for all of South Africa's media about Bravo?

To get any three South Africans from across the franchises and seasons of Below Deck to do a Zoom roundtable with media and a Q&A about their experiences? To introduce a NBCUniversal International Networks executive or PR - anyone! - to South Africa's journalists covering TV in a basic meet-and-greet, and to talk about NBCU's plans and content for its channels and Bravo?

That is what gets traction, that is what media require, that is what will get coverage and create a good impression and engender positivity towards a "new" TV channel called Bravo. Not champagne-sipping influencers showing up for self-interested selfies at a Fenty "beauty station" and sniffing Carolina Herrera's Good Girl, who will never truly care.

Should there suddenly be a "bravo" for Bravo conveniently showing up from NBCUniversal International Networks on DStv? How about rather a big boo for a botched fail.

E! axed in Africa as it ends after 21 years, replaced by Bravo on MultiChoice's DStv from October 2025

Thinus Ferreira

NBCUniversal is dumping E! in Africa after 21 years, with the steadily dismantled channel that will be gone and replaced by the reality-saturated Bravo on 7 October.

It's an awful and tragic end for E! that MultiChoice added to DStv in December 2004.

As with all things corporate, dying and reaching the end of service as it disappears into obsolescence, there is absolutely no explanation from NBCUniversal on why it's axing E! but one, or a combination of these reasons is likely true.

E! as a pay-TV channel has been dying on the pay-TV vine for a very long time, with less and less content investment, a schedule littered with repeats, stale and old programming and repurposed Bravo content.

E!'s only remaining "real" show - once its flagship programme and schedule staple - E! News also got cancelled, and once your sole remaining anchor programme is gone, there's nothing left of what was once signature E!.

E! is also one of the channels NBCUniversal decided to get rid of, spinning it off as one of the Versant-held channels.

E! as part of the upcoming Versant collection may or may not be available to NBCUniversal International Networks to distribute. In fact, even if it is available, NBCUniversal International Networks might not want to distribute it because of its low relevance as a zombified pay-TV channel.

We don't know because NBCUniversal International Networks hasn't communicated to the media about changes, plans, or programming in a very long time.

What happens to the remaining E! content is unclear; NBCUniversal International Networks didn't explain, but was asked, and comment will be added here when received.

In a prepared corporate quote attributed to Hendrik McDermott, MD, Hayu, EMEA Networks & International Direct-To-Consumer, NBCUniversal, about pulling the plug on E!, he says "We are thrilled to be launching Bravo Africa, with our partners DStv, and to build on the success of the NBCUniversal channel portfolio in Africa by bringing audiences even more of the mega-hit global franchises that they already love – now as part of Bravo, the linear channel brand that is synonymous with top-quality reality content".

"This rebrand reflects the strong slate of Bravo programming that had already been added to E!, and now makes exclusive original programming and a wider selection of Bravo's immensely popular reality programmes available to DStv subscribers."

Byron du Plessis, MultiChoice South Africa CEO, in a prepared quote, says "DStv subscribers that are fans of great reality programming are going to love Bravo Africa, and we are delighted to be able to give these hugely popular shows a home on our platforms. The channel will be available down to DStv Access, as we continue to improve our customer value proposition across our packages".

"DreamWorks offers the best in kids' entertainment for all the family, with a strong and engaging content slate that will captivate DStv subscribers of all ages."

NBCUniversal International Networks already supplies a collection of TV channels to MultiChoice's DStv including E! Entertainment, Sky News, Telemundo, Studio Universal, CNBC Africa (licensed to Africa Business News) and Universal TV.

Georginah Machiridza, MultiChoice's executive head of content strategy and third party channels, says "As a business we continue to look for opportunities to expand both our local and international content offering across Africa. DreamWorks axed on StarTimes and StarSat across Africa.

by Thinus Ferreira

Pay-TV subscribers of China's StarTimes, operating as StarSat in South Africa, lost yet another TV channel on Thursday, this time DreamWorks that got axed today.

"The channel will be offline as at 17 February, due to production being ceased in all African countries," Luyanda Cele, StarSat spokesperson told TVwithThinus.

Dreamworks, from NBCUniversal International Networks, launched in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa on 3 August 2020 but is gone after a year and a half.

DreamWorks programming included series like Dragons: Race To The Edge, All Hail King Julien, The Adventures of Puss in Boots as well as Dinotrux and Noddy Toyland Detective.

NBCUniversal International Networks told TVwithThinus in response to a media query that "From 18 February, the DreamWorks Channel will no longer be available to StarTimes subscribers in Africa. The channel will be launching soon with DStv; we'll share more updates in the coming weeks".

IN IMAGES. 62 photos of NBCUniversal International's sumptuous Keeping Up with the Kardashians 17th season premiere party for E! in South Africa.

Like, totally.

On Sunday 15 September 2019, E! (DStv 124) held a sumptuous Sunday afternoon VIP screening of the 17th season premiere episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, before its broadcast later that evening at 20:00.

The channel, supplied by NBCUniversal International Networks (NBCUIN) to MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service in South Africa, rolled out the black carpet on Sunday at 28 Tugela Road in Riverclub, Johannesburg as the well-heeled high-society in media were chauffeured by golf carts up to the green-lawned mansion to sip champagne and tuck into a delectable smorgasbord of food.

Put together by the unrivalled Cape Town-based events solution company Show Works, the #KUWTK17-themed, mansion-set party decked out in black-and-white was absolute perfection with wonderful spring weather.

Guests watched the season 17 first episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians on E! in a brilliantly executed, fully immersive experience, relaxing on luxury couches, eating salads (out of round plastic containers Kardashian-style), and ordering drinks from a customised cocktail bar, and a champagne lawn bar.

Inside the mansion celebrity chef Lorna Maseko was doing the food, while guests could go into the Glam Room for makeup touch-ups and mini-makeovers, while GLAMOUR magazine had a Kardashian "cover shoot" photo both/cover page mock-up box in another garden corner while a DJ and sax player provided leisurely afternoon vibes.

In front of the multi-garage units outside gleamed black fast-rides all polished to perfection next to the black carpet, with a pink balloon cloud welcoming guests outside at the front door Roman pillars.

Almost everything at the E! event seemed as if it was conceived to be Instagram-able - so much more than at other TV programming media launches.

Of course it's not really how the Kardashian clan lives.

But on Sunday 15 September 2019 in Riverside, it really completely looked and felt like Calabasas - and as if a Kim, a Khloe, a Kourtney or even a Kris could, in any moment, be coming around the Korner.
