THE FORCE IS WITH FALLING SKIES: Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi TV drama contains a shout-out tribute to George Lucas' Star Wars.
What do you do when you're big friends in real life, if you both love science fiction, if you both create science fiction movies and TV shows, and if you love each other's work? Well, if you're Steven Spielberg you do a micro second tribute in your science fiction show of your friend's science fiction work.
Steven Spielberg's new TV sci-fi drama Falling Skies starts Monday 4 July at 20:15 on Fox Entertainment (TopTV 180). Fox Entertainment made the first few episodes of this great new TV show available as a preview screener to a select group of South African TV critics. Exactly 8 minutes and 16 seconds into the first episode of Falling Skies I noticed a micro second don't-blink-or-you'll miss-it moment: a shout-out tribute by Steven Spielberg to his buddy George Lucas's Star Wars mythology.
The commander of the ragtag group of humans still left forming the resistance after Earth's been invaded by aliens in modern-day Boston, moves his hand on the map whilst discussing strategy. In a split second in Falling Skies, almost too quick to catch it, what viewers will see is Star Wars figurines - a Battle Droid and Anakin Skywalker action figures from Star Wars The Clone Wars (The Cartoon Network, DStv 301, Thursdays, 17:55). The Battle Droid represent the Mechs - the one type of alien attacking humans. Anakin Skywalker of course represents the remaining humans.
Below I have another image from the first episode of Falling Skies, the other type of alien called Skitters, who run and surround a human they just shot:

Another Star Wars TV special in the works, as well as another new TV series - Star Wars: Detours - reveals creator George Lucas.
Another Star Wars TV special set during the Clone Wars era is coming, as well as a brand-new TV series entitled Star Wars: Detours, Star Wars creator George Lucas has revealed.
The new TV special will be out in America towards the end of the year, while Star Wars: Detours will ''complement Star Wars The Clone Wars'' currently on The Cartoon Network (DStv 301). George Lucas spoke to CNN about Star Wars: Detours and it wasn't immediately clear from what he said whether this is yet another new TV series, or the planned live-action Star Wars TV show that hasn't yet been referred to with a specific name.

Star Wars TV show may be too vast and expensive for even George Lucas to bring to television.
The already highly anticipated live-action Star Wars TV show from Star Wars creator George Lucas starring real actors and set in that galaxy far, far away, might actually not happen.
According to an update by Rebelscum, George Lucas says ''the live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do 'em. Because, they literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them [at] a tenth the cost. And, it's a huge challenge . . . lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be.''
In 2005 George Lucas announced that the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be followed by a real live-action TV series of possibly 100 episodes set in the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
