SABC2 will show the last episode it has of 7de Laan tonight unless the SABC pays the show the outstanding millions its owed.

The final episode of 7de Laan will be broadcast on SABC2 tonight unless the cash-strapped public broadcaster pays the millions of rands still owed to the production company which is refusing to deliver the last 10 episodes unless it gets its money.

The SABC has not responded to a media query made on Monday about the non-payment to Danie Odendaal Productions. 

Insiders told me that the SABC has also not responded to any of the emails from the production company over the last few weeks pleading for communication from the broadcaster and payment for what it is due.

Danie Odendaal Productions is still owed millions of rands for what's left of the final 7de Laan season after the broadcaster decided to abruptly cancel the long-running soap in July. 

The SABC which made another R1.1 billion rand loss in its latest reported financial year, is no longer able to keep shows like 7de Laan on the air despite it being the second most-watched show on SABC2 with 901 668 viewers.

When 7de Laan ends, the SABC plans to replace it in the 18:00 timeslot on SABC2 with yet another rerun of the 27-year old Afrikaans sitcom Vetkoekpaleis made in 1996, although full episodes of Vetkoekpaleis are available on YouTube.

In September the SABC caused yet another production shutdown of 7de Laan - similar to what has happened several times in the past with the show as well as other SABC productions - due to non-payment. 

After an emergency SABC payment in September, production resumed on the final 45 episodes of 7de Laan.

Now the SABC has once again not paid 7de Laan, with the production withholding the final 10 episodes which are supposed to take SABC2 to 26 December when the last episode is supposed to be broadcast on the day after Christmas. 

7de Laan is supposed to end with a nostalgia-filled look back at the years and characters who have shared their drama-filled lives in the fictional Hillside suburb in Johannesburg.

According to insiders close to the production, 7de Laan "is still owed millions".

According to one insider, the last episode that was delivered to the SABC is the episode which will be shown tonight, on Tuesday 12 December on SABC2. "The SABC only has one episode left," the person said who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another insider revealed that "the big concern now is that if 7de Laan delivers the last 10 episodes, Danie Odendaal Productions will find it challenging to receive payment from the SABC for closure work that has been done".

According to the person, besides payment of millions of rand outstanding, the SABC needs to sign and provide the production company with an addendum to the original contract, which is for the closure of 7de Laan, as well as the work that was done to finish off the show.


Production had already wrapped on the show that was filmed at Sasani Studios in Highlands North in Johannesburg with the sets in the studios which have been packed up and emptied out and with cartloads of items which had been donated to places like the National School of the Arts in Braampark.

I asked Danie Odendaal Productions for comment, that confirmed that it is still owed millions of rand by the SABC.

"The SABC owes us millions leading up to including the closure of the production that was concluded on 28 November 2023 which was the extended period needed to pack up after we wrapped filming on 27 October," the production company said in response to the media query.

"Numerous emails have been sent to the necessary parties at the SABC but no response has been received to date. We await formal communication in response to our emails querying the outstanding money and information from the SABC before we are able to upload the remainder of the episodes," the company says.

The production confirmed that it is 10 episodes of 7de Laan which have not been given to SABC2 yet.

7de Laan actor David Rees 'bravely battling on in ICU' after return to hospital following lung infection.

The 7de Laan actor David Rees is back in hospital just a week after he was released, following another setback after a heart operation.

His spokesperson Corlia Strauss says David Rees is "bravely battling on in ICU" - back in an intensive care unit at hospital after his quadruple heart surgery and this time due to a lung infection and an irregular heartbeat.

"David Rees remains in ICU, persistently battling towards recovery. The road has been arduous and David is keenly anticipating his return home," she says.

The actor, known for his role as Chris Welman in the SABC2 soap 7de Laan and Niek Naude in M-Net's Egoli, suffered a heart attack on 30 July and underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery a week later on 7 August.

It's unlikely that he'll be back to film 7de Laan's final episodes, with the cancelled long-running soap which is currently filming the last of its episodes and will shutter on 24 October at Sasani Studios. The final episode will air on SABC2 on the day after Christmas on 26 December.

The actor doesn't have a medical aid. 

His sister Monique Buttle created a "David Rees Medical Expenses" page on BackaBuddy that has reached a total of close to R90 000 to help pay for his massive medical expenses.

"David's journey to full recovery is still underway, making the need for financial assistance more critical than ever," Corlia says. "Each donation, no matter the amount, is a precious act of kindness with profound significance."

Angry SABC2 viewers joining public protest to demand reversal of 7de Laan cancellation.

Furious 7de Laan fans will protest this coming Thursday over the SABC's shocking decision to cancel the long-running SABC2 soap with a petition which will be handed to SABC executives demanding that the public broadcaster keep the show on the air.

The 7de Laan MyNou - Amptelik group, which has more than half a million followers on Facebook, is organising a public protest for 28 September at 10:00 at Campus Square Auckland Park in Johannesburg saying that 7de Laan "cannot pay for corruption at the SABC".

The public protest against the SABC's cancellation of 7de Laan will be supported by the GOOD political party.

The SABC abruptly cancelled the Danie Odendaal Productions show in July, saying that it can no longer pay to keep SABC2's second most-watched show on the air, with the final episodes being filmed until 24 October at Sasani Studios in Johannesburg. 

The final 7de Laan episode is set to air on SABC2 the day after Christmas - 26 December.

7de Laan was forced to shut down production earlier this month for three days over non-payment from the SABC. 

The SABC made another partial payment after news of the production shutdown became known, but the broadcaster still owes Danie Odendaal Productions millions of rand. The SABC posted another annual loss of R1.1 billion for the 2022/2023 financial year.

According to the SABC, 7de Laan needs double the viewers and should cost half the money the production costs to make, to remain on the air.

7de Laan had 1.052 million viewers in August on SABC2. That was more viewers than anything watched on MultiChoice's DStv last month, as well as more viewers and a higher TV ratings and audience share than anything watched on SABC3 last month 

According to Caroline Phalakatshela, SABC publicist, "We have received news about a petition but the decision taken is a business decision aligned to audience viewership and the financial state of the business".

"The fact that SABC2 cannot afford to continue carrying a drama such as 7de Laan due to the accumulative costs and the dropped viewership numbers still remains. The show would need to double in audience numbers and also drop in the production costs to realise a positive return on investment. This we don’t see happening in the next few months as the channel has been monitoring this programme for the past years."

A "Red 7de Laan" petition on change.org has racked up over 38 000 signatories and comments by Monday since it was started in July by Jermaine Christians, urging the SABC to renew 7de Laan, and saying that its cancellation would lead to job losses, and that "shutting the door of an award-winning soap with millions of viewers doesn't make sense".

Kayleen Bessit, 7de Laan publicist, told me that the show is aware of the public protest action being planned over the SABC's cancellation of the show.

"The planned protest of 7de Laan fans shows 7de Laan's significant impact on South Africa. We're deeply touched by their determination and conviction to get the SABC to reverse its cancellation decision and immensely thankful for the unwavering support of all the fans."


SABC's cutting down of shows not the way to go
In response to a media query about 7de Laan's cancellation, the SOS Coalition, a public pressure group supporting public broadcasting in South Africa, told TVwithThinus that the "SABC's audience growth is dependent on compelling content that speaks to the needs and interests of the people of South Africa".

"Good and quality locally produced shows are the only way it will be able to retain a good audience base that will also be beneficial for increasing revenue - given that advertising is the only stream that is currently sustaining the SABC," says Uyanda Siyotula, SOS Coalition national coordinator.

"The cutting down of shows that showcase South Africa's diversity and build social cohesion is not the way to go. The SABC needs to reappropriate its budgeting accordingly. More money needs to be invested into the production of local content. Currently, that is not the case - salaries have a bigger budget than content." 

"Commercial and community broadcasters, pay-TV and on-demand platforms are competing for the same audiences and also produce local content. If these audiences leave the SABC, there is no coming back. It is not ideal for the SABC to be cutting down on shows that set it apart."

"If the SABC continues on this trail it will risk losing the loyal viewers that it has. Once the SABC loses more viewers, it will plunge into an even bigger loss. This will also indicate failure to deliver on its mandate as this show brings people of different ethnic groups and races together".

SOS Coalition: SABC's axing of multicultural 7de Laan damaging to democracy.

The SOS Coalition says the South African public broadcaster's axing of the multicultural soap 7de Laan on SABC2 is bad for democracy and that the SABC's inability to pay local productions is a very big problem.

The SABC that is deep in the red financially and made another annual loss of R1.1 billion for the 2022/2023 financial year is struggling and juggling the payment of all its biggest shows, known as the "Big Five" - Uzalo, Generations, Skeem Saam, Muvhango and 7de Laan - with 7de Laan that got axed in July after the broadcaster can no longer afford to keep it on the air.

Last week Monday, Danie Odendaal Productions abruptly shut down filming of the show at Sasani Studios on the outstanding 45 episodes still to be delivered to the SABC over the broadcaster's failure to pay the producers which are owed millions of rand.

After the SABC found some more money to pay the show on Wednesday, production resumed on Thursday last week for the show that lost three whole production days in the time left on the contract until 24 October to film the remaining episodes. 

The final 7de Laan episode will be broadcast on SABC2 on 26 December but if the production loses more days before 24 October the show will have to end sooner due to fewer episodes.

"As the SOS Coalition we are deeply concerned that the financial crisis at the SABC is unfortunately affecting the production of local content," says Uyanda Siyotula, SOS Coalition coordinator.

"The grim state of the public broadcaster's finances has been made apparent by reports of the immediate shutdown of production on one of South Africa's longest-running television programmes, 7de Laan."

"Even though it has been reported that following partial payment by the SABC, Danie Odendaal Productions will resume production of 7de Laan until the final season is concluded in December as intended - the financial crisis remains worrisome."

"Media reports also revealed that the SABC is struggling to pay producers of some of their popular shows," Siyotula says.

"As the SOS Coalition, we are concerned about the impact this financial crisis will have on the local production sector. When the SABC cuts down on local content production, the detriments are not only limited to local producers but the creative industry at large, including actors and writers."

"Further, cutting down on programmes such as 7de Laan that kept citizens entertained by playing a critical role in promoting cultural diversity and fostering social cohesion, is a threat to our democracy."

The SOS Coalition says that "we have recently also witnessed how these financial constraints affected securing of the 2023 Rugby World Cup broadcasting rights."

"The SABC board must communicate with the public its plan to pull the SABC out of the financial crisis it finds itself in. There must be transparency and accountability from the SABC along with a way forward."

Danie Odendaal Productions to restart production on 7de Laan's final 45 episodes after struggling SABC makes a bit payment.

7de Laan will restart filming on Thursday on the outstanding 45 episodes to conclude SABC2's cancelled soap after the SABC paid some money this week after the show was forced to shut down production on Monday because of the public broadcaster's failure to pay the massive amount of money owed to the series.

TVwithThinus has reliably learnt that production will resume on Thursday on the 45 episodes left which must be filmed at Sasani Studios before 24 October. 

These episodes will keep 7de Laan on the air for its final season on SABC2 which will conclude with the last episode shown on 26 December.

After the SABC decided to cancel the long-running Afrikaans soap in July which is SABC2's second most-watched show on the channel, the cast and crew of Danie Odendaal Productions took a decision to try and make the remainder of the episodes very special but the show got sabotaged by the SABC which failed to pay the massive amount of money due to the production to keep it on the air.

Anxious crew and cast - already stressed about their work and income ending at the end of next month - were plunged into additional anxiety when Danie Odendaal Productions said it's unable to pay them any further since the SABC has not kept up making the payments to its show that it is supposed to.

Making the decision to shutter the show over the weekend after the SABC told the producers last week Monday that it doesn't have any money to pay, meant that the show's production schedule was thrown into turmoil since booked guest actors, artists and others needed for certain days and scenes had to be cancelled and will have to be rescheduled - if it's even possible.

Now the production will gear up to restart filming from Thursday and to try and rework the lost production days and hours of the week and to make up for that in the coming days.

According to industry insiders, while the SABC promised a partial payment this week to the show, a large amount of money is still outstanding, with no indication from the public broadcaster - once again heading to a financial cliff - on when the rest of the outstanding money owed to various production companies and suppliers will be paid.

The SABC didn't respond to a media query made on Tuesday.

Danie Odendaal on Wednesday morning confirmed to TVwithThinus in response to a media query that the show will now restart filming on Thursday.

"After further engagement with the SABC regarding outstanding payments, Danie Odendaal Productions is pleased to announce that although the full amount owed has not yet been settled, there are now sufficient funds to resume production."

"We can confirm that production will recommence on Thursday, 7 September, 2023. The cast and crew are committed to delivering the high-quality content our fans and viewers deserve."

The SABC has not yet published its 2022/2023 financial report but is set to again declare another huge annual loss, this time in excess of R1 billion.

SABC2 viewers facing blunt 7de Laan end with fewer episodes to the series finale over SABC non-payment.

A blunt, abrupt ending to 7de Laan with no proper conclusion – as well as even fewer episodes to the end – is what waits for SABC2 viewers if the SABC doesn't very quickly find the money to pay Danie Odendaal Productions to resume filming of the remainder of the soap's episodes.

After the SABC cancelled the long-running Afrikaans soap on SABC2 in July, the production worked to complete the remainder of the final season's episode order but was forced to abruptly shut down production on Monday – two months before the supposed final day of filming on 24 October – after the SABC failed to pay the show what it's owed.

The SABC owed Danie Odendaal Productions a massive amount of money, as well as other production companies doing local shows for the public broadcaster.

The SABC on Monday in a statement admitted that it owes Danie Odendaal Productions money but is unable to pay and unable to say when it will be able to pay due to the broadcaster's massive financial troubles.

The SABC has not yet published its 2022/2023 financial report but is set to again declare another huge loss, this time in excess of R1 billion. 

The broadcaster is once again trying to do various "payment arrangements" with various suppliers, including production companies who the SABC have contracts with to deliver content in return for payment.

The SABC only contracted Danie Odendaal Productions to produce 7de Laan episodes until 24 October, which is supposed to keep 7de Laan on the air with original episodes until 26 December. 

The production company in turn contracted the crew and cast until 24 October, with 45 episodes which remain to be filmed.

Since work stopped, it's becoming a growing danger that SABC2 will no longer get 45 completed episodes from Danie Odendaal Productions since the time doesn't exist to produce this number of episodes in the available production schedule days which are fast running out.

In addition, the current 7de Laan cast and crew won't be available after October since they've accepted work on other shows and productions, so even if the SABC pays later, the show's talent in front of the camera and behind the scenes won't exist and be available to film episodes in November.

The SABC will also have to struck the sets like Oppiekoffie and the other Hillside sets at Sasani Studios in the final days of October and take it elsewhere where it wants to store it – any days over and the broadcaster, which owns all of the sets, props and wardrobe, will have to pay additional rent to Sasani to house property that's no longer being used.

The SABC only paid Danie Odendaal Productions for its June invoice on 1 September with a lot of money still owed and outstanding.

Danie Odendaal Productions told TVwithThinus on Tuesday in response to a media query that it hasn't yet heard anything from the SABC after production on 7de Laan ceased on Monday due to non-payment.

"There been no further developments or response from the SABC," the production said on Tuesday morning.

SABC can't say when it will pay massive amount of money owed to 7de Laan as time runs out for shuttered SABC2 soap to film its final 2 months of episodes.

The SABC on Monday morning confirmed that it hasn't been able to pay 7de Laan on SABC2 in order for the production company's now-shuttered show to restart filming episodes, with the public broadcaster unable to say when it will do so or how it plans to rectify and fix the disastrous situation.

The SABC on Monday confirmed that it is unable to pay 7de Laan and can't say when the broadcaster will be paying the company to resume production. The SABC reportedly owes Danie Odendaal Productions "a massive amount of money".

On Monday the 7de Laan cast and crew didn't report for work at Sasani Studios in Johannesburg and started a stayaway after Danie Odendaal Productions shut down production of the long-running SABC2 show which has two months of filming left.

According to industry insiders, members of Danie Odendaal Productions were summoned to a meeting last week Monday at the SABC in Auckland Park where Merlin Naicker, SABC head of video entertainment, and Lala Tuku, SABC head of content for video entertainment, told the production company that the SABC doesn't have any money to pay the show.

Tuku has jetted off to Cape Town where she is a panellist this week at the Fame Week Africa 2023 conference.

"In terms of the meeting that the SABC had with production houses, it must be noted that this was one of the regular meetings in which the SABC discussed payment plans with everyone," Mmoni Seapolelo, SABC spokesperson told TVwithThinus on Monday morning in response to a media query made on Sunday.

"The SABC is committed to ensuring that all production houses affected are prioritised and continuous engagements happen with relevant stakeholders to resolve the matter."

"The situation is regrettable and is as a result of various factors including the SABC's financial status that is known in the public domain and the external factors such as the dire effects of analogue switch-off and loadshedding that affect the audience ratings to enable the SABC to generate revenue as the corporation relies on this as the main source of income."

"The SABC urges all interested parties to advocate for the viability of the public broadcaster and encourage the payment of TV licenses as stipulated by law."

On Sunday Danie Odendaal Productions in response to a media query confirmed that 7de Laan is shutting down due to SABC non-payment.

In a statement the production company said filming is stopping until "the SABC meets its financial obligations" and that "due to these outstanding funds, we are currently unable to cover the salary and operational costs necessary to continue production. As a result, the decision was made to temporarily suspend production until such time as the SABC can fulfil its financial commitments to 7de Laan".

The cast and crew employed by Danie Odendaal Productions have been paid for August, but the production company - since it hasn't been paid by the SABC - doesn't have the money to either continue production or to pay anyone at the end of September and October.

The very real danger now is that 7de Laan will simply end when the SABC abruptly runs out of the last delivered episode months before 26 December when the final episode is supposed to air which hasn't even been filmed yet.

If the SABC doesn't pay Danie Odendaal Productions, filming won't start, with the cast and crew whose contracts only run until 24 October when the final episode was supposed to be filmed after which they are released.

Now the SABC and the production company are losing valuable time they can't get back. Should filming restart, the 7de Laan episodes that remain to be filmed will have to be squeezed into whatever time remains, meanwhile with an even more stressful production schedule.

The show might also lose out on booked and potential guest actors, former actors returning and other artists invited for guests appearances since all of this is now off the table and will have to be reorganised and rescheduled - if or when 7de Laan starts filming again.

2023's 17th South African Film and Television Awards: Full 17th SAFTAs nominees list with Netflix and kykNET crushing the competition.

kykNET is crushing the competition with 63 nominations, followed by Netflix SA with 55 nominations for the 17th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) which is set for September – while SABC2’s cancelled 7de Laan is completely sitting out the SAFTAs this year since it didn’t have the money to enter.

The 5th season of kykNET’s Hotel comedy series and the kykNET Films movie Gaia, as well as the third season of Netflix SA’s comedy-drama series How to Ruin Christmas and its film Silverton Siege will likely be the four big winners in September, with these productions from MultiChoice and M-Net’s Afrikaans channels division and the video streaming service scoring the most nominations.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announced the nominees for the 17th SAFTAs on Tuesday morning, which will return to Johannesburg on 29 and 30 September after a production-challenged stint at Sun City last year. 

After moving the SAFTAS from April in previous years to September in 2022 for the first time, it’s now clear that the awards show organisers have chosen this month as its new permanent berth on the annual awards show calendar.

Themed “Our stories flow together”, the awards will take place on 29 September and broadcast live on the SAFTAs YouTube channel and with a later rebroadcast on SABC channels, while the main 17th SAFTAs awards ceremony will be broadcast live on 30 September on both Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) and SABC3 at 19:00.

After last year’s absence, both Word of Mouth Pictures producing Muvhango on SABC2, as well as Stained Glass TV’s Durban Gen on e.tv, entered the 17th SAFTAs this year. Still boycotting the awards is Ferguson Films, meaning no nominations for any of its shows like The Queen on Mzansi Magic.

Also missing in action is the cancelled SABC2 soap 7de Laan from Danie Odendaal Productions which didn’t enter the SAFTAs – not because of a boycott but not having the money to do so.

"The decision not to enter the 17th SAFTAs was influenced by the costs associated with preparing entry materials. Financial contraints have hindered us," the show told me.

Only productions that enter specific shows for various categories of the awards are eligible to have those soaps and telenovelas be listed in the Most popular TV soap or telenovela category which is a public vote, which means that this particular category yet again remains incomplete this year with the absence of 7de Laan, The Queen and Stained Glass TV’s Lingashoni.

For the 17th SAFTAs, MultiChoice and M-Net’s Afrikaans channels division has reason to smile proudly with 63 nominations, punching far above its weight with 13 nominations for the 5th season of its comedy TV series Hotel, nine nominations for Gaia as the first Afrikaans ecological horror fantasy film which scooped five wins at last year’s 10th Silwerskermfees, as well as another nine nominations for its Binnelanders soap from Stark Films.

Netflix South Africa with 55 nominations for the 17th SAFTAs, has the film with the most nominations this year: Twelve for Silverton Siege produced by Pambilimedia. Last year Netflix SA also had the film with the most nominations.

Netflix scored a further 12 nominations for the third season of How to Ruin Christmas produced by Burnt Onion Productions, following after 16 nominations for the second season last year. 

Meanwhile its rival streamer, MultiChoice’s Showmax and its evergreen Tali mockumentary that had 11 nominations last year, scooped eight nominations this year for its third season entitled Tali’s Joburg Diary.

The cancelled Tshedza Pictures-produced telenovela The River on M-Net's 1Magic (DStv 103) that got 11 nominations last year, scored 11 nominations this year again, with 12 nominations as well for the cancelled Legacy on M-Net (DStv 101). 

Thobela Mayinje, NFVF acting CEO, says "The NFVF is encouraged by the confidence the South African film and television industry is showing to the SAFTAs".

"The high number of entries speaks volumes about the growth of the SA film and television industry, with new productions making part of the nominees list as well. It's also exciting that this year, industry peers will again be able to interact and celebrate each other in person."
