M-Net renews Survivor South Africa for an all-stars 9th season to be broadcast in July 2022.

by Thinus Ferreira

M-Net (DStv 101) has renewed Survivor South Africa for an "all-stars" 9th season in 2022 that will be broadcast in July next year.

On Thursday afternoon MultiChoice flashed a Survivor SA title card at its DStv Content Showcase, saying that it will be on-screen next year.

Sources told TVwithThinus on Wednesday night that Survivor SA was renewed, but M-Net didn't respond to a media query by Thursday afternoon after the pay-TV channel was asked about the renewal on Thursday morning.

Sources said that the new season is apparently being filmed in January 2022 and might be an "all-stars" season with previous contestants but M-Net's PR communication team didn't want to respond to these questions on Thursday when the channel was asked about it.

Survivor SA is produced by Afrokaans with Handrie Basson as executive producer and Leroux Botha as creative producer and series director.

In a statement, MultiChoice on Thursday afternoon finally confirmed the news, saying "In 2022, Survivor SA returns for its 9th season - and this time the greatest game on earth will see a cast of returnee outcasts who were outwitted and outplayed on previous seasons battle it out to outlast and become the Sole Survivor".

"These players, who never made it to the final Tribal Council, all have a score to settle. Get ready for Survivor SA: Return of the Outcasts - on M-Net in July 2022."

And just like that M-Net snags the Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That as well as the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon.

by Thinus Ferreira

Similar to Sky in the United Kingdom M-Net (DStv 101) has now acquired from WarnerMedia's HBO Max both the Sex and the City sequel series, And Just Like That, that will start in December; as well as the Game of Thrones prequel spinoff series, House of the Dragon that will be broadcast in 2022.

There is no word yet on whether M-Net will be picking up the Harry Potter 20 year cast reunion special, Return to Hogwarts - also an HBO Max Original - similar to what Sky did, although it's extremely likely given that M-Net acquired the Friends reunion earlier this year from the same American studio.

The 10-episode And Just Like That will debut in America on HBO Max and on Sky on 9 December with M-Net (DStv 101) that will start showing it a few days later from 13 December at 20:30 with a double episode premiere.

And Just Like That episodes will be available on DStv Catch Up as an Express from the US title on Fridays from 10 December for DStv subscribers using the DStv app or a connected DStv Explora decoder.

And Just Like That will be placed on Showmax later once its run on M-Net is done.

And Just Like That is billed as the "next chapter" for Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her New York friends, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and some new friends as they find themselves facing love, life and friendship in their 50s.

The cast also includes Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson, and Evan Handler.

According to sources M-Net also acquired the Game of Thrones sequel spinoff series, House of the Dragon that has no broadcast date for 2022 yet.

Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the series - which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones - tells the story of House Targaryen, with Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

The M-Net rollout will very likely follow the same broadcast procedure as Sky with House of the Dragon that will be an Express from the US title for M-Net and be available on DStv Catch Up with the series that will move to MultiChoice's Showmax later as a second pay-window.

A magical return
Meanwhile, WarnerMedia is working on Return to Hogwarts that reunites the Harry Potter cast - Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint - 20 years after the first film was screened.

Sky has already picked up Return to Hogwarts that is set for a 1 January 2022 release date on HBO Max but with M-Net that hasn't yet made any announcement about having secured it. M-Net didn't respond with an answer to a media query made last week about it.

While author J.K. Rowling won't be joining the stars in the surprise-filled special, the American filmmaker Chris Columbus will be part of it as well to discuss the films and to explore their creation in depth.

"Fans will be invited on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time", HBO Max says, with the cast returning "to where the magic started".

The Return to Hogwarts special will also include Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton and Tom Felton.

Casey Patterson, executive producer, says "There's magic in the air with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago. The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films".

Second season of National Geographic's killer virus anthology series The Hot Zone: Anthrax set to debut on 5 December in Africa.

by Thinus Ferreira

The second season of National Geographic's dramatised killer virus anthology series The Hot Zone: Anthrax will debut on National Geographic (DStv 181 / StarSat 220) on Sunday night 5 December at 21:00.

Viewers across Africa will see episodes of The Hot Zone: Anthrax exactly a week after it's shown in America and where the series is starting on 28 November, with the series that will debut in the United Kingdom on 1 December.

Ironically The Hot Zone: Anthrax was filmed earlier this year in Toronto, Canada as the world lives through another dangerous virus with the global coronavirus pandemic showing no sign of ending soon.

With Daniel Dae Kim as FBI agent Matthew Ryker and Tony Goldwyn as microbiologist Dr Bruce Ivins, the 6-episode series focusing on the Anthrax attacks in America in 2001, will be shown in double episodes over three Sunday nights in December and is produced by 20th Television and Scott Free Productions.

The Hot Zone: Anthrax takes place in 2001 a few weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks when Americans were terrorised after letters containing white powder were sent to addresses in Florida, Washington DC, and New York.

Five people died and the terror acts caused widespread panic in America. A team of FBI agents and scientists slowly closed in on a prime suspect with The Hot Zone: Anthrax that will tell a story with several more layers and little-known background information.

The Hot Zone: Anthrax cast also includes Dawn Olivieri as FBI special agent Dani Toretti who is among the first agents on the ground at the 2001 Capitol Hill anthrax attack; Ian Colletti as agent Chris Moore who is a graduate of Quantico, and Dylan Baker as FBI agent Ed Copak.

Morgan Kelly is FBI agent Eric Sykes with Denyce Lawton as pharmaceutical lobbyist Sheila Willis in a relationship with Ryker. Carlos Gonzalez-Vio is Dr Simon Kurz, Vanessa Matsui plays scientist Jody Hall, Enrico Colantoni is New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and Harry Hamlin portrays the NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw.

Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson are The Hot Zone: Anthrax executive producers and showrunners.

MultiChoice says that "Nolo Letele will retire as a non-executive director of the board of directors and the social and ethics committee with effect from 1 December 2021".

Nolo Letele became executive chairperson of the MultiChoice SA board and a non-executive director when MultiChoice was separated from Naspers and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

TV CRITIC's NOTEBOOK. Why lazy Mzansi Magic's lackadaisical decision to drop the Idols winner media briefing damages DStv, Idols and South Africa's entertainment press.

by Thinus Ferreira

Another one bites the dust: Rome didn't fall in one day and it wasn't so much the barbarians that got better, than Rome that became complacent, lazy and incompetent.

On Sunday night South Africa's entertainment media sphere atrophied just another bit more when a lazy communications team from the M-Net group running the Mzansi Magic channel failed to do a basic media briefing for the first time in 19 years for Idols season 17.

The M-Net communications team specifically responsible for the Mzansi Magic channel on DStv couldn't even bother to alert the media that there wouldn't be a media briefing on Sunday night after the conclusion of the show.

There was just, well, nothing.

For whatever reasons, the M-Net comms team at Mzansi Magic under Philly Khubheka couldn't even bother to come up with a bare-basic Zoom virtual media briefing on Sunday night for the group of media who used to attend in the past, following the conclusion of the 17th season of Idols on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) like last year and all the years prior to that.

The result was absolutely no collective media exposure in front of the press for the winner Berry Trytsman, runner-up Karabo Mathe, the producers and executives, or the sponsors for the first time in the show's history.

The no-show post-show media briefing shows a lack of understanding at Mzansi Magic, a lack of insight into why something like an Idols media briefing matters, a lack of grasping the how-to of what came before, and why something like a basic media briefing for Idols still has relevance today.

What an utter embarrassment for MultiChoice, the M-Net people running Mzansi Magic, Idols, executive producer Gavin Wratten and Randburg executives like Gideon Khobane and Nomsa Philiso with Idols that once again scaled back some more on what it used to be.

MultiChoice and M-Net's Mzansi Magic used to be much - much! - better than this. Idols used to be better than this.

Instead, lazy, arrogant and complacement people working in "communications" but apparently not versed in the basic fundamentals of actual media communication (or simply not willing to put in the work), seem to find any excuse on the book to do less, be less - and eventually do nothing.

"Idols has been making dreams come true since inception and as Mzansi Magic. We are proud to have given the contestants a platform to showcase to showcase their talent" is what Mzansi Magic sent out in a press release on Sunday night to South Africa's media, with the statement attributed to Nomsa Philiso, M-Net director for local entertainment channels.

Nobody at MultiChoice or M-Net's Mzansi Magic division apparently bothered to read or to even do a basic read-through or proofreading of their own press release before this shoddily done trash-release got sent to media by Mzansi Magic's comms team for them to read.

The really low-note and lack of communication around the Idols finale to media, caps off the overall nadir of the 17th season of the show that saw the least effort and media communications to press in the history of Idols since it started in 2002.

And I know: I've covered the reality singing show from its very beginning and saw and have followed everything about Idols as a reporter through almost two decades.

The M-Net group and MultiChoice keep losing ground to global rivals and newcomers like Netflix - not because Netflix is "so good" but because the traditional pay-TV service is not able to simply maintain basic things like even just an Idols media briefing for Mzansi Magic that it used to do like proper media communication.

Idols used to demand media attention. Why? Because Idols, MultiChoice, and M-Net's Mzansi Magic channel used to signal - through strong and persistent media interaction - that Idols is a show that matters.

It owned SA pop culture space and proudly showed off that it fully stood in its space.

When last did Idols, MultiChoice and Mzansi Magic do (even virtually) any media-meet up of the Top 16, or Top 10, or the top contestants showing how and where they lived, or a weekly group media exit media briefing with the person who left, or tried to involve media in regional auditions?

Yes it's Covid but let's keep Covid out of the picture for the moment. Multiple people who worked in media and who are still at it, will remember when press were given access to weekly Idols Sunday spectaculars and attended.

Media were invited on and attended the so-called "Hell Week" theatre week media junkets, went and attended the Idols finale, and were present to ask questions at the post-show media briefing and to file reports thereafter.

For all of these things an innovative Mzansi Magic communications team, PR people and real, dynamic leadership would have found ways in Covid to bring versions of media access to all these "portions" of Idols to the press. Instead ... nothing.

Like a river canyon cutting away sediment unnoticeably over time, Idols and the Mzansi Magic channel little by little eroded literally everything the erstwhile proper media approach for the show that Mzansi Magic took over from the M-Net channel, leaving nothing more than a few banal, stock-written press release email-blasts as its only remaining communication approach.

If a show or a TV channel don't claim its space or attention, the media (mostly) don't care.

Rival shows, channels and their publicist will and do move in and the media moves on - their available attention taken up with whoever and whatever actually bothers to reach out to them.

MultiChoice, and the M-Net group's Mzansi Magic channel on DStv can be no more blatant about how little Idols - and how little media coverage for the show - apparently still matters.

By scrapping even the post-show media briefing, Mzansi Magic isn't just showing how lazy and uninterested it is in any press coverage for Idols, it is showing (wrongly) that nobody's job actually matters: Not that of marketers, not publicists and not journalists.

Having a collective media briefing with the winner, Mzansi Magic as a DStv channel, producers, executives and with the sponsors present, apparently doesn't yield enough media coverage to make such a press conference worth it.

To Mzansi Magic it's a wasted exercise - a rationale for yet again doing less, and being fine with there then being less: Less interest, less media coverage - less everything.

Spare a thought for sponsors like Vodacom, Old Mutual, Truworths, Darling and Yamaha who probably thought they were going to get some media coverage through being involved with Idols but getting even less media traction in 2021 with season 17 than ever before due to the lack of proper or any coherent media engagement.

On a weekly basis South African reporters covering television are courted, invited, included and involved in doing multiple Zoom virtual media briefings for large and even small international TV shows across various TV channels.

Yet even just doing a basic virtual media briefing (as has been traditional and institutional) for Idols to wrap up the end of a season, is now proving too much, too difficult, too cumbersome, and too much work for MultiChoice and the M-Net comms team at Mzansi Magic. It's tragic.

Gone are the days when Lani Lombard at the M-Net channel (DStv 101) would hold spot-on, perfectly executed media briefings for Idols to cap off seasons.

Gone are the collective of media, all sitting together, junior media learning from more senior members - with reporters from community radio and national newspapers alike - getting to pose their questions with roving mics and getting answers and soundbytes.

Not bothering and being incapable of doing a post-season Idols media briefing further diminishes the sheen that Idols once had and its attention cache.

Very sadly, Mzansi Magic is sending the message that Idols no longer matters.

It's one less local media briefing within the broader local TV industry that local media get/got to attend, got to experience and cover, or had to "benchmark" against the rest of the world, as to say: We're (also) doing this in South Africa like you in the rest of the world. We have this too.

When a local reality show like Idols that mattered had a winner, the media got invited and attended, as if the court of public opinion convened in an open forum to welcome a newly crowned king or queen. But it no longer matters to Mzansi Magic, and it's apparently no longer important.

Perhaps the last person leaving Mzansi Magic's PR division that has apparently become redundant in its "less-is-more" media communications approach, can maybe remember to just activate the "we're all gone because nothing mattered" out-of-office reply.

Berry Trytsman wins Idols season 17, reality singing show renewed for season 18 as Mzansi Magic dumps post-show media briefing for the winner after 19 years.

by Thinus Ferreira

Berry Trytsman (Berry Trytsman) (30), a 30-year old mother from Cape Town was announced as the winner of season 17 of Idols on Sunday night on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) with the reality singing competition that was renewed for an 18th season and with MultiChoice and M-Net that dumped the post-show media briefing for the winner after 19 years.

Berry Trytsman - who received more votes than runner-up Karabo Mathe after 12.5 million votes were cast the past week - closed out Sunday's live broadcast of the season 17 finale of Idols with a rendition of her new single "Ungowami".

The 17th season of Idols was Berry Trytsman's second attempt after she reached the Top 30 round of Idols during its 6th season in 2010 but then got eliminated.

The season 17 Idols finale took place at Urban Brew Studios on the same triangular stage where the Sunday live shows took place this season after the show moved to the Johannesburg studios of the production company from the Pretoria State Theatre.

"Overwhelmed. Like so, so, so grateful and so happy you have no idea," said Berry Trytsman in the closing seconds of the season 17 Idols finale after she was announced as the winner. She gets a recording contract from Kalawa Jazmee Records.

[SIC] Entertainment, with director and executive producer Gavin Wratten and co-producers Anneke de Ridder and ProVerb (Tebogo Thekisho) who is also the presenter, announced that Idols will return for an 18th season in 2022 and with online audition dates that will be announced for the South African version of the Fremantle format on the Idols website "soon".

M-Net and MultiChoice abruptly dumped the usual Idols post-finale media briefing that had taken place the past 19 years for all previous 16 seasons of Idols with national media that were not given the usual opportunity to collectively post questions to the winner and runner-up, the producers or M-Net's Mzansi Magic channel.

Besides losing out on the earned media from the usual Idols post-show press conference for the winner that has very little time to get a Christmas album out, M-Net and MultiChoice also took away media exposure from the sponsors Vodacom, Old Mutual, Truworths, Darling and Yamaha who were involved with the show this season.

Philly Khubheka told TVwithThinus in response to a media query that M-Net decided to axe the Idols press conference because media allegedly prefer one-on-one interviews.

Besides MultiChoice and M-Net axing the media briefing, Idols has been in a sharp viewership decline this season with ratings that precipitously fell this season by hundreds of thousands of viewers as DStv subscribers tuned out following a scandal with the judge Somizi Mhlongo who exited the show.

Mzansi Magic issued a press statement following the conclusion of the 17th season of Idols, with Nomsa Philiso, M-Net director for local entertainment channels, saying in a prepared statement: "Congratulations to both Berry and Karabo for making it this far in the competition".

"I am blown away by their talent and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for them as they join a long line of Idols winners who have since become celebrated stars. Idols has been making dreams come true since inception and as Mzansi Magic. We are proud to have given the contestants a platform to showcase their talent".

Nobody at M-Net bothered to proofread the press release.
