M-Net has neither cancelled nor renewed The Bomb Shelter telenovela Isibaya on Mzansi Magic yet.

by Thinus Ferreira

The Isibaya telenovela on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) channel has neither been cancelled nor renewed for a 9th season, M-Net tells TVwithThinus.

Isibaya, produced by The Bomb Shelter, is currently in its 8th season on the Mzansi Magic channel on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV service.

Rumours started swirling that M-Net has cancelled Isibaya because of low-ratings.

However, the truth is that MultiChoice doesn't cancel or renew shows based on ratings since viewership alone matter much less - although it does play somewhat of a role - on pay-TV channels.

Free-to-air channels are dependent on TV commercials with the price of adverts determined by the size of the viewership.

On a pay-TV channel like Mzansi Magic, retaining the subscriber from month to month is what matters since the pay-TV service gets a monthly subscriber fee as the main source of income, irrespective of whether a subscriber watches a specific show on a specific TV channel or not.

Isibaya lured 726 847 viewers in September as the 7th most-watched show on DStv.

"Every year before we recommission the great shows that are broadcast on Mzansi Magic, we conduct a review of all shows, using a variety of metrics as standard practice in the industry, to ensure the decision to renew contacts is well informed, Nomsa Philiso, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net, told TVwithThinus in response to a media enquiry.

"The review is not exclusive to Isibaya and an announcement will be made in due course."

Vodacom adds Amazon Prime Video, gives customers 6-months free and cheaper thereafter than going direct.

by Thinus Ferreira

Vodacom is now offering existing and upgrading contract Vodacom customers 6 months of free access to Amazon Prime Video, which will thereafter be cheaper at R79.99 per month than the existing R95 per month it costs to subscribe to Amazon Prime Video directly.

Vodacom's announcement about the Amazon Prime Video tie-in offer comes on the same day that Telkom plans to launch its new TelkomONE streaming service today.

Vodacom already operates its own Vodacom Video Play video-on-demand (VOD) service.

After the 6 month free promotional period, Vodacom will charge customers R79.99 per month for an Amazon Prime Video subscription which will be added as a line-item to a customer's monthly invoice or airtime.

This R79.99 per month to watch Amazon Prime Video through Vodacom - besides the 6-month free trial period - is cheaper than the $5.99 or R95 per month that a customer will pay or is currently paying to sign up with Amazon Prime Video directly.

Vodacom has now jumped MultiChoice that also planned to offer DStv customers subscriptions to Netflix South Africa and Amazon Prime Video through a DStv Explora decoder, with the option to subscribe and unsubscribe monthly at will for access to these additional streaming services, and pay for it in rand, added to their DStv bill.

MultiChoice's plan to provide customers with third-party streaming services besides its own Showmax through an OTT carousel offer - likely also at a slightly cheaper price than going direct - has been hampered by an investigation of South Africa's Competition Commission that has forced MultiChoice to postpone its roll-out and further announcements about it.

Vodacom and Amazon Prime Video's launch offer is available to all existing and upgrading contract Vodacom customers, as well as to prepaid and top-up customers who have spent a minimum of R150 with Vodacom over the last 30 days.

These Vodacom users will be able to watch Amazon Prime Video series like The Boys, The Grand Tour, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Carnival Row or Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan on up to 3 devices at the same time with the Amazon Prime Video app, or any compatible TV, smartphone or tablet.

"We continuously strive to partner with premium content providers to deliver compelling propositions that keep customers connected for a better future," says Jorge Mendes, Vodacom chief officer of consumer business.

"The introduction of this Amazon Prime Video offer for our customers underpins our commitment to enabling a digital society."

Mariam Cassim, chief officer of Vodacom financial and digital lifestyle services, says that Vodacom "strives to work with like-minded partners around the globe to bring innovative digital lifestyle services to South African consumers".

"We are excited to be teaming up with Amazon Prime Video to bring about quality entertainment to our customers."

Undelivered docket drama sees Expresso TV presenter Katlego Maboe's court appearance postponed.

by Thinus Ferreira

A masked Expresso TV presenter Katlego Maboe did appear at Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning but the case had to be postponed following missing docket drama.

The disgraced TV host was summoned to appear in court today on charges of harassment of Monique Muller after the SABC3 presenter allegedly violated the court's protection order not to stay away from his former lover who is the mother of his 2-year old son.

In South Africa, a protection order aims at preventing the reoccurrence of alleged domestic violence or sexual harassment by stating what conduct the alleged offender must refrain from doing.

Katlego Maboe allegedly broke the stipulations of the protection order that Monique Muller obtained on 3 September in Seapoint, Cape Town.

Eric Ntabazalila, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, on Tuesday said that Katlego Maboe's case had to be postponed on Tuesday since the prosecutor of the case was not aware of the case and discovered the news about the court appearance from reading about it in the media.

"The expected court appearance of Katlego Maboe did not take place this morning. When the prosecutor saw an article about allegations made, she contacted the police and asked about the court appearance.  She was given today’s date for the court appearance," Eric Ntabazalila said.

"This morning the docket was not brought to court as was expected. She has since asked for the docket to peruse it. No date has been set yet for the appearance."

The protection order and growing scandal around Katlego Maboe stem from a video that went viral on social media in which the TV star who appeared in Outsurance TV commercials as well, was confronted by Monique Muller over his infidelity.

In the video, Katlego, dressed in a gown, sheepishly admits to having cheated on her with another woman identified as Nikkita Murray who has since locked her social media accounts.

In the video, Monique Muller accuses Katlego Maboe of giving her an STD that damaged her womb, and in another video she claims that Katlego Maboe allegedly physically abused her as well, saying that "When the first physical attack happened I got a protection order against him".

Katlego Maboe has since abruptly disappeared from the public eye, only releasing a terse statement, saying that "I was unfaithful to my partner during a very important time of our lives - an act I regret to this day. We are currently undergoing an unfortunate and painful separation which is being resolved through legal proceedings".

"In light of the comments made against me, I would like to state that I have never abused my partner," Katlego Maboe said.

Katlego Maboe and Monique Muller have not issued further statements.

To try and limit brand damage Cardova Productions took Katlego Maboe off the air from its weekday breakfast show Expresso on SABC3 that is produced from its studio in Tokai.

Expresso publicist El Broide said in a statement that the SABC3 show "condemns any acts of violence and mistreatment, especially against women and children, and therefore take such allegations very seriously".

"Until such time as the matter has been fully investigated, and pending the outcome, Katlego Maboe will not be appearing on Expresso".

The insurance company Outsurance rushed to re-edit and scrub all traces of him from all of the insurance company's "Chencha dai deng" TV commercials, now only showing testimonials of customers without Katlego interviewing them.

In new revelations in the latest 5 November issue of YOU and Huisgenoot magazines, a close confidant of Monique Muller reveals that Katlego Maboe is allegedly not the man that viewers see on TV.

In July this year, Monique discovered that Katlego Maboe allegedly gave her an STD. Katlego Maboe apparently travelled to Kiev, Ukraine to watch a soccer match while he was a brand ambassador for Lay's Chips where he later admitted to Monique that he kissed one of the women who won the competition on a dancefloor. He later allegedly had sex with this woman in a hotel room.

GoBinge has not yet published the sit-down interview that the YouTube channel did and teased with Monique Muller more than a week ago, in which she talks about how Katlego Maboe had allegedly physically attacked her and how he cheated on her.

Many viewers feel that the "new" Top Gear seen on BBC Brit (DStv 120) doesn't work and is awkward.

"While the host and producer should shoulder some of the blame, serious questions need to be raised about the editorial failure that gave the go-ahead to run the interview."

BCCSA fines eNCA and e.tv R10 000, eMedia Investment's TV channels ordered to apologise over Gareth Cliff’s Covid-19 conspiracy theorist show.

by Thinus Ferreira

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) has fined the South African TV news channel eNCA (DStv 403) and the commercial free-to-air channel e.tv with R10 000 for contravening the broadcasting code over a Gareth Cliff broadcast, with eNCA and e.tv that must apologise for an interview with a conspiracy theorist who claimed that Covid-19 is a "pandemic hoax" and that "there is no virus".

On 22 July 2020 eNCA and on 23 July e.tv broadcast a Gareth Cliff interview during his So What Now? programme with the conspiracy theory guest David Icke who made multiple false statements around Covid-19.

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) complained to the BCCSA and said that the broadcast was unlawful, harmful, and in breach of South Africa's broadcasting code.

MMA argued that "In the current context, as South Africa and the world grapple with the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, broadcasts of this nature that patently seek to spread disinformation should be carefully scrutinised, as they do not serve the public interest or further any meaningful engagement on the subject."

MMA said that eNCA as a news broadcaster has a heightened responsibility to ensure the credibility and truthfulness of the content that it disseminates.

MMA told the BCCSA in its submission that eNCA's Gareth Cliff show with David Icke "intentionally disseminated disinformation based on facts that were untrue", "promoted unlawful conduct that was in violation of the regulations issued under the Disaster Management Act" and that "by denying the existence of Covid-19 and claiming it to be a scam, the consequence of the broadcast may result in people not following appropriate precautionary and health measures in line with the advice of the relevant authorities".

According to Media Monitoring Africa, eNCA and e.tv's So What Now? "failed to effectively present opposing views", said that "the segment with David Icke did not include any other guests, which might have included a medical expert who could meaningfully counter David Icke’s denial of the existence of COVID-19" and that Gareth Cliff "also did not effectively counter David Icke’s denial, and acknowledged that he was neither a doctor nor a researcher on the subject".

"Moreover, Gareth Cliff also ended the broadcast by expressing his confusion, stating that 'I hope you’re as confused as I am' ".

MMA in its submission said that eNCA and e.tv "have, at no stage, shown any contrition for their conduct".

"Rather, the broadcasters appear to have taken the view that the broadcast of disinformation is permissible and defensible, despite this being below the standard required of responsible broadcasters by the Codes. Not only was the programme broadcast twice – once on eNCA and thereafter on e.tv – it is further relevant that the programme remains accessible on the eNCA website to be viewed by anyone at any time."

The BCCSA ruled that "We find that the potential harm to the population with this broadcast, and the host of the programme falling short by far to counter the misinformation divulged by David Icke, justify the imposition of a fine of R10 000". This joint fine must be paid by 15 November 2020.

The BCCSA also ordered eNCA and e.tv to broadcast an apology at the start of the first So What Now? episode broadcast in November 2020.

Youth-focused, mobile-focused video streaming service TelkomONE with linear TV channels set for launch on 5 November 2020; Telkom says it won't be competing with Netflix and Showmax.

by Thinus Ferreira

Telkom will launch its new TelkomONE video streaming service on Thursday 5 November as a mobile-first, youth-focused streamer, offering a range of on-demand content but no movies, a collection of linear TV channels and with differently-tiered subscription levels but says that it doesn't plan to be competition for Netflix or Showmax - at least not initially.

Telkom is also hinting that it will make some form of new mobile data component or "tie-in" package available to Telkom customers to make it possible for people to watch TelkomONE for cheaper if they stay within the telecom's own ecosystem, although subscribers on other networks will also be able to access TelkomONE.

Although Telkom says that TelkomONE won't be competing with the likes of Showmax and Netflix, it is jumping into the exact same video streamer pool available in South Africa that is quickly filling up with rivals ranging from Vodacom Video Play and VIU to Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video and some others.

While more international streamers like WarnerMedia's HBO Max, Walt Disney Company's Disney+ , Discovery Inc.'s discovery+ and Paramount+ from ViacomCBS might reach South African shores in 2021, Telkom is launching TelkomONE despite Covid-19 and a worsening economic outlook that will see consumers think even more carefully about their dwindling discretionary spending.

Different tiers
"With the market that we're looking to target, you need to have different tiers of subscriptions. So we're definitely looking at monthly, weekly, weekend, daily pricing propositions, making it easier for the consumer using TelkomONE to spend in relation to their wallet and in relation to how they want to consume content," Wanda Mkhize, Telkom's executive for smart home and content, tells TVwithThinus.

A big issue and barrier to entry with video-on-demand services, especially in Africa, is the hurdle of not just having to pay a subscription fee to access a streamer but also for expensive internet, with broadband penetration, speed and data costs that remain problematic.

Telkom says it is mindful to try and sidestep the failures of previous video-on-demand (VOD) offerings in South Africa like VIDI and recently Cell C black that had to close down, as well as the billion-dollar short form content streamer Quibi in the United States that abruptly announced last week that it is shutting down.

"We made sure that we understood what's been happening in the market - some of the failures - Cell C black, Quibi, and I think some other services that have had challenges. It's about understanding the localised market, and understanding the hard-hitting point that data is very much a key barrier in a lot of communities," says Wanda Mkhize.

"For us, the TelkomONE proposition that we will be bringing, is from the understanding that it is something that is looking at content, as well as a data component - not just the cost of data but how do we ensure efficiencies in the usage of the data that is allocated through to the customer."

"How do we ensure that we give our consumer using TelkomONE the maximum quantity out of the data that they have, and also ensuring that the content proposition resonates and speak to them in whatever it is that they are looking for to see."

Diverse content bakery
About the types of content that TelkomONE will be offering, Wanda Mkhize says "our bakery has a variety of cakes and desserts on option. Aligned with the consumer segments that we are targeting and as we broaden the proposition we will have a variety of content opportunities."

"Definitely there will be some shorts. There will be some series. At launch, TelkomONE will not be having any movies. As a mobile-first proposition, we have identified it as not necessarily the best consumption mechanism but in future, as we expand the proposition we will definitely be introducing more."

"We will have content in different languages," she says.

TelkomONE will be accessible through Android, iOS, as well as on Telkom's own Telkom LIT set-top-box. "We will also be making available a SmartTV app, so if consumers have an application it will be made available."

"We are also not a locked-network service. As much as we would have preferential data offerings for our Telkom subscribers the service will be open to everyone, even those not on the Telkom network - so even if you're not on the network, both fixed and mobile, you can still get access to TelkomONE."

"This is really an opportunity that we've seen for us to expand this aggregation relationship or strategy that we've started because this is just the start."

"We will be adding on new partners, as well as new services that are new to South Africa as well just to further broaden the appeal and to broaden the offering that is available to South Africans in the content space," says Wanda Mkhize.

Not competing with Netflix or Showmax
TelkomONE, similar to what Cell C black did, will stream a collection of linear TV channels, enabling people to watch TV channels as they would on their TV set but through the internet using a mobile device.

"The type of market that we are targeting is not necessarily a youth segment who's been on digital platforms only. We don't see ourselves as competing against Netflix or MultiChoice's Showmax. We're looking at a different consumer set, and understanding that a lot of the customers that we are targeting, there's still a need for linear television."

"Linear TV is never going to die," says Wanda Mkhize. "I've been in the over-the-top (OTT) and VOD space and as much as I sit down and I love the opportunity to find a programme that I want, I can sit for a good half an hour trying to find something and end up back at linear television."

"We want to give our consumers that opportunity and that choice to be able to - if there's something news or current affairs related, and they want to engage with that, as well as some other linear TV content that may be of interest, to actually be able to access that content."

"We want them to also eat and catch-up as much as they want, from what they want, from the VOD section."

Speaking about the number of linear TV channels that she doesn't want to reveal yet, Wanda Mkhize says "we've been working with a number of suppliers. We are finalising everything."

Young and mobile
"From early-2015 and eventually the launch of our Telkom LIT propositions we've been working as a super-aggregator, looking and working with other content and content platforms and OTT providers to enable our subscribers to better access these rich video platforms and to get the entertainment and services that they want," says Wanda Mkhize.

"Having worked with a lot of these content providers, we identified that there was definitely a gap in the market. There are very propositions focused on your higher-end customers; a lot more international-content focused, and much more of a lean-back, fixed-broadband type of propositions."

"We identified that there is definitely a need for a mobile-first platform that really services the customers where we've really seen the biggest growth in South Africa and Africa as a whole which is the mobile consumer, and the mobile consumer using data within that space, and also youth-focused."

"We see mobile and the youth, and a content proposition put together to service this market as the TelkomONE focus. It's also about local content, and the question is how do we make sure that we find the right content to deliver to that market that we want to attract? How do we find localised content made for mobile?"

To help in this process, TelkomONE is running a competition until the end of November asking South Africans to send in their ideas and video examples of anything from lifestyle shows to short form telenovelas that it has dubbed "mobivelas".

"Mobisodes and clips are happening within the space of YouTube but not as a service that is looking at creating it from an episodic perspective and focusing on the youth market. So we really want to find that localised content that really is made specifically for TelkomONE as a platform," says Wanda Mkhize.

"The question is also around how do we start to create these new content value-chains? Traditionally our broadcast value-chain and market has been your big-ticket production items like your Muvhango on SABC2, Generations on SABC1, The Queen on Mzansi Magic."

"However, there are a lot of young up and coming creative people who have thought about creating something but haven't necessarily thought that they are 'creatives' and getting into the industry. TelkomONE wants to create opportunities and give them a platform on which they can bring their youth-focused ideas."

About why Telkom is launching TelkomONE now instead of 2021, during a tumultuous year marked by the global Covid-19 pandemic, Wanda Mkhize says "We want to end the year with a bang; we think there are a lot of opportunities. It's been a tough year. Just launching with something new and fresh to close off the year is really an exciting opportunity for us."

TV presenter Katlego Maboe summoned to appear in court this coming week on harassment charges after allegedly violating the protection order for Monique Muller.

The disgraced Expresso TV presenter Katlego Maboe will have to appear in court this week on charges of harassment of Monique Muller, after he allegedly violated the court's protection order not to stay away from his former lover who is the mother of his 2-year old son.

In South Africa, a protection order aims at preventing the reoccurrence of alleged domestic violence or sexual harassment by stating what conduct the alleged offender must refrain from doing.

The Rapport newspaper on Sunday reported Sunday that Katlego Maboe allegedly broke the stipulations of the protection order that Monique Muller obtained on 3 September in Seapoint, Cape Town. He will now have to appear in court on Tuesday.

The newspaper quotes Eric Ntabazalila, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, who confirmed that Katlego Maboe, as well as Monique Muller, will have to be in court on this coming Tuesday 3 November.

The growing scandal surrounding the TV personality follows after a video on social media last week that has gone viral in which Katlego Maboe is confronted by Monique Muller over his infidelity.

To try and limit brand damage Cardova Productions this past week has taken Katlego Maboe off the air from its weekday breakfast show Expresso on SABC3 that is produced from its studio in Tokai.

YOU and Huisgenoot obtained another video in which Katlego Maboe tells Monique that his shameful behaviour is because he thought that being on TV enabled him to engage in this type of behaviour and that he feels terrible about it.

In the video, Katlego Maboe says that when he's on people's TV screens he is forced to smile and look cheerful because it's his work - but that when he's off-camera he doesn't have to keep up a happy and friendly persona.

Interestingly, a week later GoBinge has not yet published the sit-down interview that the YouTube channel did and teased with Monique Muller since last weekend, in which she talks about how Katlego Maboe had allegedly physically attacked her and how he cheated on her.
