David Blaine magic, megastructures and mysterious islands coming to Nat Geo in 2025

by Thinus Ferreira

National Geographic will show a documentary film about the discovery of the Endurance ship at the bottom of Antarctica's Weddell Sea, go up in the Alaskan air, share a magical David Blaine discovery and investigate more crashes, ice roads and megastructures over the next few months on the yellow frame channel.

National Geographic (DStv 181) shared content highlights between now and March 2025 at a programming upfront that was held on Wednesday morning.

It included a screening of the documentary film Endurance which chronicles the discovery of this ship that sank in Antarctica in 1915 and was discovered by the SA Agulhas II during an expedition in 2022.

"Our top priorities are really a lot of brand-new stories coming to National Geographic," Tracy-Ann van Rooyen, senior manager of programming and scheduling at The Walt Disney Company Africa, said at the Johannesburg upfront event.

"We are really going for specials and life-storytelling that we haven't seen before - the first of which is Endurance. Endurance is a story of leadership, of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew who were stuck a century ago on the Endurance."

"It's the story of how now we were able to uncover that story to really understand what happened to them and how they survived."

Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin are the directors with Dan Snow as executive producer and Mensun Bound as the marine archaeologist onboard the icebreaker SA Agulhas II that left in 2022 from Cape Town to search for the Endurance.

Endurance premieres on National Geographic on Sunday 3 November at 21:00, with a repeat on Friday 8 November at 20:30.

"Twenty years ago one of the biggest natural disasters in the world happened when a tsunami hit Asia. Tsunami: Race Against Time is telling that story in unique detail and perspective 20 years later," Tracy-Ann van Rooyen said.

Tsunami: Race Against Time follows the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the deadliest in history, minute by minute as it spreads, with unseen archive video and stories of survival and courage.

The 4-episode series features scientists who raced to understand the unfolding disaster and warn the world, journalists who broke the news, and rescuers who risked everything to save others. Tsunami will premiere in two double episodes on Thursdays at 20:30 from 28 November and 5 December.

"It's created by the producers of the 9/11 series One Day in America, and they went through this process of uncovering unseen footage and then went to go and find those people who took the footage. Twenty years later these people are telling the story of that day."

The 8th season of To Catch a Smuggler starts on National Geographic on Thursday 28 November at 18:50 with more cases of Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security and what they find along the borders of the United States.

Megastructures Real Madrid Super Stadium will unspool on 11 December.

The film The Devil's Climb, directed by Renan Ozturk, premieres on National Geographic on Sunday 29 December at 21:00.

Rock climbers Alex Honnold of Free Solo and Tommy Caldwell set off on an epic adventure, cycling thousands of kilometres en route to a daring climb of the Devil's Thumb, a legendary Alaskan peak surrounded by old-growth rainforest.

Tommy is recovering from a career-threatening injury, making the expedition's success uncertain.

Witches is a new special about the Salem Witch Trials and how rumours created catastrophe for women in the 1800s in the United States. Plane Crash Recreated is a new series.

From the Wreckage is another new series that will start in early 2025 on National Geographic.

"Mysterious Islands is a new 10-parter series also coming in 2025. It's an absolutely unforgettable adventure to explore the most enigmatic islands on our planet. Each episode has four islands and uncovering various secrets."

"Mutant Weather takes viewers on a fun and shocking view of bizarre weather phenomena - like dry lightning, thunder snow, ice snow - just really unpacking how the world from a weather point-of-view is quickly changing."

Tracy-Ann van Rooyen unveiled No Taste Like Home with Anthony Porowski as a new series for 2025 "who speaks to people about their food journeys and their food cultures like Issa Rae, Akwafina and Justin Theroux."

Destruction Decoded "is another new series about how a major disaster can be traced back to its original spot and how nothing really happens by accident.

The 9th season of Ice Road Rescue starts on National Geographic on Tuesday 17 February 2025 at 19:40 when "the Ice Road bosses face ever tougher challenges than before".

"Heading into blizzards in the dead of night, in temperatures falling to -30oC, demands commitment, character and courage. It’s time for Norway's newest tow truckers to prove that they really are a breed apart."

David Blaine also comes to National Geographic in the first quarter of 2025.

"He comes to National Geographic and Disney+ and is an exceptional mind. His story is called David Blaine: Do Not Attempt and it will be on National Geographic in March 2025. It's a cinematic journey following him as he chooses to go to little-known parts of the world where people are experimenting with ideas of magic."

by Thinus Ferreira

National Geographic (DStv 181) held a programming upfront for content over the next few months, as well as a documentary film screening for Endurance, on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

The content preview and Endurance screening was done in the form of a brand immersion event. Guests had to get seven stamps on a card from visiting various booths and completing tasks and activities.

The Carte Blanche presenter Masa Kekana who had visited Antarctica was the MC, with Tracy-Ann van Rooyen, senior manager of programming and scheduling at The Walt Disney Company Africa, who took attendees through the National Geographic programming highlights between now and March 2025.

Attendees watched Endurance, a documentary film about the discovery in 2022 of the Endurance - the ship of Sir Ernest Shackelton that sank in Antarctica in 1915 and what happened to the crew.

In keeping with this theme the National Geographic venue was set up with the help of a cooler temperature, plush white couches and fog from a smoke machine to create the ambience of a white Antarctic landscape.

The Endurance directors Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin; marine archaeologist and director of exploration, Mensun Bound, as well as executive producer Dan Snow recorded a special video message.

Producer Danie Odendaal dead at 77

by Thinus Ferreira

Veteran TV producer Danie Odendaal has died. He was 77.

The creator of SABC2's long-running 7de Laan through his Danie Odendaal Productions died in Langebaan after a short sickbed.

The cause of his death on Wednesday evening isn't immediately known.

Danie Odendaal suffered a stroke five years ago in December 2019 while at his home in Pervillac, France and returned to South Africa. His health deteriorated over the past few months.

His family in a statement says "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Danie Odendaal who died peacefully on 30 October 2024, in Langebaan, where he resided for the past 6 years, with his beloved wife, Annie Odendaal".

"Danie lived a life full of creativity and warmth, quietly shaping the world around him through his story telling. Known for his humour and wit, he had a way of speaking his mind that inspired those fortunate enough to know him."

"His contributions to television and theatre in South Africa paved the way for countless others, and his legacy shines brightly through 7de Laan, a beloved soap opera that captured the hearts of so many. It stands as a lighthouse to his artistic spirit and people-first approach."

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Thandi Ramathesele, a friend and business partner to Danie, who held his dreams and vision for 7de Laan close, honouring his legacy with dedication and respect."

"Our thanks also go to Candice Moodley- who was much like a daughter to Danie and Annie - who cared for Danie's well-being and managed his portfolio with grace, bringing comfort to his later years."

"Danie will forever be remembered for his kindness, humour, and creative spirit. You were all in some shape or form, his family."

Besides 7de Laan, the producer, director and writer wrote the TV series Saartjie, Dennekruin 12 and the script for the film Galery.

He was the director of Dennekruin 12, Galery, Die man met 'n lyk om sy nek, Beelde, Saartjie, Okovango: The Wild Frontier and the miniseries Veldslag.

Danie Odendaal studied at the University of Stellenbosch as well as the Sorbonne University in France and Trinity College in Cambridge in the United Kingdom and joined the SABC as a director when television started in South Africa.

When Franz Marx started Egoli for M-Net (DStv 101), Danie Odendaal was appointed as head writer in 1992. After eight years in this role, he crafted 7de Laan - an idea he had for several years - for SABC2 which started in 2000.

Danie Odendaal remained executive producer for 15 years until he stepped away from 7de Laan and became co-producer after the SABC ordered the mandate and style of the soap to change.

Henry Mylne, who worked with Danie Odendaal at Egoli and then as director at 7de Laan until the SABC2 soap ended, told RSG on Thursday that Odendaal's death was a shock.

"It's a shock. We were not prepared. He died peacefully."

Global celebs line up for Prince William's first Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town

by Thinus Ferreira

Britain's Prince William and a phalanx of international stars will be in Cape Town on 6 November when the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards takes place for the first time in Africa with celebrities like Heidi Klum, Davido, Diamond Platnumz, Nina Dobrev, Robert Irwin and others attending where the Ndlovu Youth Choir will perform.

Bonang Matheba and American actor and singer Billy Porter are the co-hosts of the 4th Earthshot Prize Awards which will take place under extremely strict security measures on 6 November in Cape Town as part of Earthshot Week which starts on 4 November in the city.

The Earthshot Prize was founded by Prince William in 2020 and this year's awards show will announce five winners out of 15 finalists from six continents who will each win £1 million (R22,9 million). The ceremony will be shown on YouTube worldwide and on MultiChoice's DStv across Africa.

The Earthshot Prize Awards will have a green carpet with a live green carpet pre-show which will be live-streamed globally on The Eartshot Prize's YouTube channel on the evening. Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and rapper Moozlie will be the green carpet show's hosts.

Besides the Ndlovu Youth Choir who will sing with Lebo M, the Earthshot Prize Awards will include performances and appearances from artists across East, West, Northern, Southern, and South Africa.

International stars set to appear include the Nigerian singer-songwriter Davido, the Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz, the South African composer Lebo M, as well as producer Uncle Waffles. Actor Tobe Nwigwe and Canadian model and beauty entrepreneur Winnie Harlow will also attend.

The five categories in which prize money will be awarded include "Protect and restore nature", "Clean our air", "Revive our oceans", "Build a waste-free world" and "Fix our climate".

Nomzamo Mbatha will act as host for Earthshot Week, together with Robert Irwin, the Australian conservationist and wildlife photographer who is the son of the late Steve Irwin.

Robert Irwin says he is "very excited to help bring this year's Earthshot Week to life in Cape Town", with Mbatha saying "There are so many inspiring Earthshot innovators who are dedicating their lives to repairing our planet, and I can’t wait to help share their stories".

Hannah Jones, Earthshot Prize CEO, says "Our annual global awards are designed with intentionality, aiming to breakthrough into youth and mainstream culture, and to become a once-a-year 'date in the calendar' for infusing urgent optimism into the global environmental narrative".

"Together with partners from the arts, entertainment, sport and music, we are united with one aim: By showcasing Earthshot winners and finalists, can we spark young people's imaginations and invite them to imagine a future in which they too could become an Earthshot winner?"

TV REVIEW. Wrong envelope syndrome and mistakes remain but 18th SAFTAs finally looked smoother

by Thinus Ferreira

As a new first-time-done production after a new producer took over the TV broadcast of the 18th South African Film and Television Awards, the 3-hour showcase on Saturday night was smoother sailing than in previous years, although mistakes - like another wrong envelope opened - persisted.

The live 18th SAFTAs main awards show, done from Hall 3 at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg on Saturday night was far from the error-riddled, cringeworthy and painful watching experience it has perpetually been in previous years.

Produced by Relebogile Mabotja and Bruce Townsend's Black Swan Media, the 18th SAFTAs telecast shown on SABC2 and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) became probably the first-ever SAFTAs award show to achieve a passing grade, with a lot fewer of the obvious mistakes that marred previous years.

Viewers however still had to watch through 23 minutes for the first award to be handed out in what is an awards show. At 20:23 viewers finally got their first winner.

Throughout the night several very amateurish-looking presenters announced nominees and winners in categories, with several blatantly struggling to pronounce show titles and the names of winners.

Clearly, nobody was prepped by floor managers or through voicenotes in the week on how to pronounce the few nominees correctly which they would have to articulate on stage. Leave it to a reality TV star to literally say: "Oh, I'm not going to pronounce this correctly".

Sound problems, sound level issues and background music playing during speeches persisted all night.

Where winners in categories were no-shows it became obvious that the majority were from outside of Johannesburg and not flown by the NFVF to the SAFTAs

Once again this year viewers had to hear a "No sorry. Correction. They gave me the wrong one ..." on Saturday night after a wrong envelope was opened prematurely and viewers discovered Natasha Sutherland was going to win as Best supporting actress in a TV drama before it was that category.

The In Memoriam segment was the most complete one at the SAFTAs ever (great).

It had a funeral sponsor (good), although wrong camerawork and angles coupled with wrong control room decisions for certain shots made several names completely invisible and unseen (bad).

The singer also stood in front of and was camera-framed in front of dearly departed names in several shots, also making some names illegible (bad) to viewers at home.

Great was the addition for the first time in SAFTAs history of a sign language interpreter block in the bottom right corner, as well as the very first deaf presenter to introduce a category, who spoke with the help of an interpreter.

Also great were the SAFTAs stage design and stage lighting (especially the LED strip lights as trim on the steps).

The addition of a righthand side block on stage depicting television watching and the making through different eras all the way to today's ring-light home studios set-up was a very nice touch.

Also well done were pre-filmed mini-reunions like the cast of Surburban Bliss reflecting on the show during its time, issues like racism and the evolution of South Africa's TV biz.

Another very good improvement: The SAFTAs producers who stopped showing and lovingly panning across empty seats.

Very few empty seats were visible, along with very few people seen walking and milling about. It made the awards show appear much more elegant and orderly.

The rolling film interstitial that framed slightly hazy clips of nominees looked and worked very good as an audio-visual element.

The NFVF's SAFTAs showed boobs (Shaka iLembe) for the first time ever, although just a second.

The SAFTAs also for the very first time ever included the uncensored "F-word" - twice - in a pre-packaged clip and without any language warning on SABC2 or Mzansi Magic. Keep in mind this is supposedly family-viewing as variety programming.

The speech of Kagiso Modupe, who won as Best supporting actor in a TV comedy for Netflix's Yoh! Christmas, was extremely cringe-worthy to watch as he claimed that he was the only person to ever have paid actors royalties.

His highly ironic utterances came as the very upset cast and crew of his Pound 4 Pound series for Paramount Africa's BET channel have still not been paid.

Best acceptance speech of the 18th SAFTAs probably goes to Zikhona Sodlaka who won as Best actress in a telenovela for Mzansi Magic's cancelled Gqeberha - The Empire.

She said: "Who knew that a time like this would come when the world would be ready for performers from Africa? When the world would be ready for our stories? And told exactly as who we are. If you are watching from home, you are enough."

18 SAFTAs full winners list: Shaka iLembe clinches 12 Golden Horns

by Thinus Ferreira
South Africa's most expensive TV show to date earned its hefty price tag with the first season of Shaka iLembe which won 12 awards at the 18th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), while Netflix's Yoh!, Christmas and Showmax's Outlaws both netted eight Golden Horns each.

Over the two-night craft and main awards ceremonies on Friday and Saturday night – again held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg – MultiChoice and M-Net’s set of TV channels on DStv scooped 32 wins in total, followed by Netflix South Africa with 19.

MultiChoice's streamer Showmax won 10 awards in total, although its Canal+ co-production drama series Spinners got completely shut out and was snubbed with no wins.

Amazon Prime Video surprisingly grabbed seven trophies, five of which were for The Fragile King, which also won Best feature film.

The wins are both painful and ironic since Amazon Studios shocked and dismayed the local film industry when it abruptly decided to exit South African original production earlier this year.

The SABC won 12 categories for various content on the South African public broadcaster. eMedia’s e.tv won just four categories although it included a win for a second consecutive year for Ochre Media's Scandal! in the Most popular soap category, which is a public vote.

The 18th SAFTAs primarily belonged to three shows: MultiChoice and M-Net's first season of the Shaka iLembe drama series from Bomb Shelter seen on Mzansi Magic, Netflix South Africa’s Yoh!, Christmas comedy series from BBZEE Films, as well as the Outlaws telenovela on Showmax from Tshedza Pictures.

Shaka iLembe won 12 categories including Best TV drama.

Meanwhile Yoh!, Christmas pushed kykNET’s Taktiek (with just one win) out of the way to grab eight Golden Horns, including for Best TV comedy. Outlaws won eight awards, including for Best telenovela.

SABC1’s Skeem Saam won Best TV soap, while Best documentary went to !Aitsa. The late Mpho Sebeng won Best supporting actor in a telenovela for his role in SABC3’s The Estate.

The SAFTAs gave Lifetime achiever awards to Generations creator Mfundi Vundla, as well as to the actor and sculptor Arthur Molepo.

The 18th SAFTAS once again suffered from some technical problems and mistakes like the opening of a wrong envelope too soon, revealing Natasha Sutherland as Best supporting actress in a TV drama too soon and before the category's turn.

Lebogang Mogoera, acting CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), said the SAFTAs is "immensely proud of the calibre of talent showcased this year and the hard work of all those involved in bringing these stories to life".

"A big thank you to our long-standing broadcast partners MultiChoice and SABC whose support enabled us to bring the awards to all South Africans."

Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice CEO for general entertainment, said "This weekend highlighted the rich diversity and powerful storytelling that our creative industry offers viewers".

"As the leading investor in local content across Africa, MultiChoice is dedicated to supporting and expanding the continent’s film and television landscape. Congratulations to all the winners and to the teams who poured their talent and hard work into bringing these stories to life."
