Broke SABC won't show any FIFA Women's World Cup 2019; will carry 24 matches of AFCON 2019 on SABC3 from 21 June.


The South African public broadcaster says its broke and can't afford to show any matches of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 taking place in France since the SABC is "not in a financial position to bid for the rights".

The SABC made the announcement on kick-off day of the tournament.

South Africa's national women's football team known as Banyana Banyana qualified for their first ever Women's World Cup but none of it will be broadcast on South Africa's public broadcaster.

The SABC says it has secured some rights to the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 (Afcon 2019) that will start in Egypt from 21 June, with 24 of the 52 matches that will be broadcast on SABC3.

Of these, 9 matches will be broadcast live on SABC3, including all matches of South Africa's national soccer team known as Bafana Bafana, as well as the semi-finals and the final. Another 15 matches will be broadcast delayed-live.

SABC3's chedule will change between 16:00 and midnight to accommodate AFCON 2019 coverage, with shows like EFC Magazine, SABC 3 titles such as EFC Magazine, #WTF, Top Billing, World of Dance, Bollywood Movie, Mela, Hectic on 3, Afternoon Express, Harry and Keeping Score that will not be broadcast on days where soccer games will be played.

In addition, the SABC's 10 African language radio stations – Umhlobo Wenene FM, Ukhozi FM, Ligwalagwala FM, Lesedi FM, Motsweding FM, Mughana Lonene, XKFM, Phalaphala FM, Thobela FM and Ikwekwezi FM – as well as Radio 2000 will broadcast 32 of the AFCON 2019 matches live, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final match.

The SABC's trufm and RSG radio stations will carry live reports.
