Court finds SABC sport commentator and woman basher Marks Maponyane guilty of assault after he hit his longtime wife Sylvia in the face with a hanger.


The Thembisa Magistrate's Court has found SABC sport commentator and woman basher Marks Maponyane guilty of assault and was fined R3 000 or 6 months imprisonment and a further R6 000 or 24 months imprisonment - suspended for 24 months - for physically attacking his then wife Sylvia Maponyane.

The woman hitter who previously played for the Kaizer Chiefs soccer team pleaded guilty and was found guilty of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm after he hit Sylvia in the face with a hanger.

Sylvia opened an assault case against Marks Maponyane after he physically attacked her in a domestic violence incident in her home in Midstream Estate in Centurion, Johannesburg after she confronted him about his alleged bedroom infidelities.

Sylvia opened a case of assault last year against Marks Maponyane after he assaulted her in one of their domestic violence incidents at their marital home in Midstream Estate near Centurion.

"Marks Maponyane pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife and was found guilty and given a suspended sentence," said National prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana.
