UNESCO names CNN International's Christiane Amanpour a Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of Expression and Journalist Safety.


UNESCO has named Christiane Amanpour a Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of Expression and Journalist Safety.

The veteran TV journalist if CNN International's chief international correspondent and the anchor of the weekday Amanpour on CNN International (DStv 401).

Christiane Amanpour was named Goodwill Ambassador at a ceremony at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris, France.

UNESCO named her a Goodwill Ambassador "in recognition of her efforts to promote free, independent and pluralistic media, having the right to work free from the threat of violence"

Christiane Amanpour says its important for journalists across the world to be "pillars of reform, freedom and democracy".

"We're here to make the world a better place," said Christiane Amanpour.

Christiane Amanpour also made an impassioned plea for the release of all imprisoned journalists, wherever they may be, and condemned the increasing number of attacks and assassinations of media professionals.
