BREAKING. Idols cut down to only 56 at the start of of the sixth season's theatre week.

A massive 39 Idols wannabees got cut with only 56 remaining in the sixth season of Idols as the dreaded theatre round rolled around earlier tonight on M-Net.

Ninety-six contestants from across South Africa arrived in Sun City and were shown straight into the auditorium. Contestants got a list of possible songs to sing from and some practiced more than others. Then 39 got sent home immediately after their next chance to perform.

In a made-for-TV moment of social engineering the remaining 56 Idols hopefuls had to divide themselves into any groups of their choice and prepare another song from a list and prepare to sing the next morning. Of course the crux of this experiment of for individual Idols contestants to associate themselves with other contestants who are good - and will make the overall group stand out - but still be individually be able to sing better than the group average. The second part of the theatre round will be broadcast on M-Net Sunday at 17:30.
